Bedtime for a 6am waker
« on: December 12, 2013, 21:55:53 pm »
My LO is 7.5 weeks old and is waking at 6am. I have tried putting him back to sleep but this doesn't work. he is never really hungry at that time eating just a small amount/often throwing up even though he isn't sicky in general. He is quickly sleepy again resulting in very short A time in this cycle and then a very short nap because he is hungry I think, i can never extend this nap though i can others we're managing EASY  but the 3 hour part hasn't clicked yet because of this - it scuppers every morning.

This means he is going to bed around 6.30 but then he cannot get through to the dreamfeed and wakes before at 9.15/30. Then he wakes again at midnight and again at 3.

Any ideas on how to get him to wake at 7? Or why this might be happening?

Also cluster feeding doesn't work. He hates being woken and ends up
over tired

Hi and welcome to BW!

If DF is not working for you then don't bother with it. It might be that it will work later on for you (that's how it was for us).

If he goes to bed at 18:30, wakes up 2-3 times a night to eat and wakes up at 6 he is actually having a really good night. I know that for us, parents, it's hard because we just want our sleep and sleep ins, but I'm afraid life just has to change.
How many naps he has a day? If you manage to put another nap in there then you could push BT to 19-19:30 and then perhaps that will move his WU to 7. But like I said, there are no guaranties and for a baby his age to sleep 11.5h a night it's just amazing.

Also, don't be worried about the 3h cycles. He is still very very young so if he is having 2-2.5h cycles it's also ok.
And if he is not hungry when he first wakes up in the morning then you can try and feed him a bit later, closer to his nap, but have a short A time in between the feed and the nap so he doesn't associate feeding with sleeping. Even a nappy change is enough.

Thanks so much. Sometimes you just need to be told everything is ok. Last night when he woke at 4.30 for a feed I realised he wasn't really hungry something had just woken him. I managed to put him back to sleep then he woke at 6 and had a really good feed!

He normally has 4 naps a day.

7.30 45 mins
9.30/10 for an hour
12.30/1 for 1.5 hours (I take him out in the buggy or sling so he sleeps longer)
3.30/4 for 30 mins

I'm not sure I could fit in another because by 6.30 he is genuinely tired but I could try.

4 naps are what he needs to be on right now and it sounds like you are already doing great.
It will get easier in time when his A times are longer, one just need to keep an eye all the time that as baby grows older his A times should go higher as well (Average A times- BOOKMARK ME! ). at his age he should be doing around 1:15h A times so if one of his A time is far from that perhaps it's time to increase it gradually.
