Turning 2 cluster feeds into 1
« on: December 27, 2013, 21:45:58 pm »
I'm confused on how to change 2 cluster feeds into 1 as Tracy suggests at 8 weeks. Today I'm able to keep my 8 week old to the 3 hour EASY routine. Following the routine my son has his last feeding at 10 or 11pm and has one night feed anywhere between 3:30 and 5 am. I'm wondering what the routine would look like when reducing the 2 cluster feeds into 1. Tracy suggests the 1 cluster feed would should be around 5:30 or 6. Assuming that my son eats at 4 (according to the 3 hour EASY routine) and then again at 6 for the one cluster feed, what does the routine look like for the rest of the night? Is it back to 3 hour increments making the next feeding at 9? Is it realistic to do a dream feed at 10 pm if there was just a feeding at 9? Any input is appreciated.

You would normally aim for a BT feed as a top-up around 7/7.30pm after the cluster feed at 6pm, then do the dreamfeed as normal at 10-11pm :). If the two cluster feeds are working for you both for now though it's not essential to change unless you want to - the book should be a guide but if something slightly different works better for you and your family that's fine!

Thanks for your reply.  While the 2 cluster feeds are working I'd like to find a way to make the evenings less hectic...I think reducing the two to one will help. Let's hope it works for my little one. What does BY mean? I don't see it on the abbreviation reference page. Thanks!

BT is bedtime. I feed my 8 week old around 5:30 when he wakes from catnap (about 2hrs since previous feed), then bath him and give a top up feed before putting him to bed around 630pm (his day is more 630-630 than 7-7). Then I just feed when he wakes overnight but you could do a dreamfeed.

I'm having the same issue. I'm thinking of compressing the cluster feed into one rolling cycle. Ie. 7.30pm feed. 8.00 bath/activity 8.30 feed. 9.00 sleep. Do you think it will work?

Should do - if you are breastfeeding you can do one side before bath, the other side after.
