moving from rock n play to crib. unswaddled...help!!
« on: January 11, 2014, 21:54:24 pm »
My 6 & 1/2 mos old needs to learn how to sleep unswaddled in her crib. She's rolling over and sitting, but will only sleep in her rnp swaddled... I tried four days ago and it was terrible so she's back to her original spot. Before she was a great sleeper both for nights and naps. Ever since our failed attempt, she hasn't really slept at all and extremely clingy. I'm losing my mind. I'm desperate for a solution. Pu/PD just upsets her more where she used to settle better with rubbing her tummy and putting her paci back in. but now that doesn't work. Yes her paci is her prop, and her swaddle? OK. I'm done now.... any advice is helpful. Thank you so much in advance!

We moved DD from her RNP to the crib over the Christmas holiday. She was 3.5 months old at the time. I was extremely worried about he transition because she slept so well in the RnP. However, we started by having her take ALL of her naps in the crib for several weeks in order for her to become familiar with the crib. Have you tried naps in the crib? I suggest doing this for a few days and then implementing nights. I've also read about other people start baby in the crib and then transfer to the RnP after the first night feed for a few days until baby sleeps more soundly.
My DD is still swaddled so I can't help there although I've heard that sleep sacks are awesome. Have you tried that?

She was awake at 5 this morning. Fed her at 645 asleep fir her nap around 8. I swaddled her with one arm out and she went right to sleep. I will try a sleep sac. I have a ton of them and never thought about it.

Last night went a little like this: 7pm started to wind down with a swaddled and a lullaby.
745 asleep after 1/2hr of putting my hand on her belly and singing a lullaby.
835 awake but settled herself- never had to go in and never cried
1230am awake and nursed. Sang her back to sleep with hand on belly. 120am asleep
4am awake and nursed (only thing that worked)
5am awake. Dad got up with her.

I haven't fed her twice in the middle of the night since I don't even know when. Should I go back to doing a dream feed or no?

How did sleep go with one arm out? Is there an improvement?

Would you like to post your day in an EASY format so we can have a look if there is some tweaking that can be done? Her NW seem OT to me...

And what do you mean by getting upset with PU/PD? It's not a cry free method, there is quite a bit of crying with it and baby often seems upset, but it does work. For how long have you tried it?
Often as well the first few times are quite hard, but it gets so much better after that.

One arm out seemed to help... but the last few days have just been crazy and she has been eating every hour and a half to two hours..there also has been solids introduced but she has seemed fairly uninterested.
Before she was on a three hour feeding schedule. Easy schedule went like this up until a couple days ago...

Wake up: 7am
Eat: 715-730
Activity: usually playing with her giraffe on my lap. About ten minutes tummy time..
Sleep: 830
Nap until 1030-11
Eat: 1130
Activity: long walk, activity mat..
Sleep: 130
Nap until 3
Eat: 330
Activity: I usually wear her and do whatever I need to do.... listen to music, read books, bath time
Sleep: bedtime @7-730
Eat: 330am

She has been ebf. I have introduced solids over the past 3weeks but she doesn't eat any of it. Not sure how that schedule is relevant since I've gone wrong somewhere BC there hasn't really been a schedule ... she hasn't been talking asleep at night till like 930, wakes up at 1145 to nurse, up again at 2am, 4 & 5...
I don't know how to fix what I've done!

Maybe she is going through GS and that's the reason she wants to nurse more often?

It sounds to me like her day is very UT and then she goes to bed OT because her last A time is extremely high. At her age she should be on approx. 3-3:15h A time, so you'll see that her first two A times are very short. This can always effect length of naps and NW, as well as the last long A time. I would gradually increase her A times by 10-15min every 3 days till you are at about 3h and decrease the last A time. I think it will help a lot with sleep issues you are experiencing now.

I have decreased her last A time and made it less OS. Its been working so far and the last 2 nights have been feeding free with only one wake at 1am. I just went in a put her paci in and she's gone back down. I woke her up @ 7am both yesterday and today to keep her on a schedule. Is that OK I did that?

If BT is at around 19 then 7AM WU is fine. Are you stretching the rest of the A times?

My goal is to keep her up and extending her time between naps to at least two hours.. we've had success with the exception of the first wake time of the day. I can only keep her awake for 1 1/2hrs tops. But we have gone 4 nights in a row of BT @ 730 & wt @ 630!

She will gradually get used to the higher A times.

Sounds like you are doing great, happy to hear you can see an improvement!
