Can you educate me on tongue ties, please?
« on: February 18, 2014, 21:24:42 pm »
I'm going to stay with a friend this week with DS. Her DS is nearly 7 months and has had a tongue tie cut twice. Seems it has grown back again, unfortunately. Sleep is hugely affected, why? How? She says she is getting 2-3 hours sleep (herself) a night, poor thing.

Obviously I am clueless and would love any info you have - more so I don't put my foot in it than anything.

If it helps, he's been on solids since Christmas and has been wolfing them down.

I always find Dr Jack Newman an excellent source for that sort of thing, and Kellymom.

I wouldn't think it's the tongue tie itself having an impact on sleep really :-\. You said he's wolfing down solids - is he getting enough milk, that would be effecting sleep! Of it could be the amount of solids he is having making him uncomfortable and not sleeping. How is he fed - breast or bottle? If he is breastfed maybe he's not feeding well because of the tie so I guess indirectly it id if that's the case.

My two both have quite severe ties (not clipped at all) and that was never a cause of sleep problems. The reflux was though!

He's breastfed. She said 11 feeds in a day recently! Maybe because he can't get enough each time?

The sleep stuff has been going on pre-weaning. Routine related, maybe?

TTs do affect how much LOs get when feeding, so could be having an impact.  Were things any different in between the divisions?

It is possible that sleep can be disrupted, often to do with wind (as they've taken in air when BF) or could be hunger due to poor milk transfer.

Lots of info about TT myths here - http://www.analyticalarmadillo.co.uk/2011/06/top-ten-tongue-tie-myths.html

Thankyou!

I'm guessing the continuous feeding is what could be impacting sleep?

Thankyou all so much for this info. It helped me start from a place of understanding, and, I hope, be useful in some way. It makes such a difference to be able to help a good friend!
