From Gro-bag to duvet - 3 years old
« on: February 26, 2014, 09:20:49 am »
Hi everyone,
It's been a long time since I wrote on the forum... we had a loooong lovely time of peaceful nights. That has changed now...  My DS is now almost 3, and has been sleeping in a grobag all his life. A while ago when he had a cold, I put a duvet on him instead as he was exhausted and just crashed on the bed. He really likes the duvet now and for a few nights he has wanted it in his bed. The problem is he is moving around a lot in his sleep, and ends up on top of it. He then cries in frustration as he can't put it back on. He wakes up several times a night crying.
I haven't gone in, just used the sleep phrase and he has eventually gone back to sleep but he is really frustrated, and we had a really EW this morning. He is still wearing a thin grobag ( thought it could be useful in the transition) so I don't think he is cold, he just wants the duvet for comfort.

Has this happened to any of you? How did you handle it? Any success stories out there?

We only taught him, during the day, to put the duvet again on himself. Eventually, he learned it.

We used Gro bedding which zips the duvet to the bottom sheet  :)

He couldn't fling it off so he never got cold!

After 3 months fully zipped, then 3 months half zipped (one side only) he's now transferred to a regular bedding set (no zips) and keeps the duvet on just fine  ;D

We changed DD to a duvet at 18 months and it really didn't take her long to work out how to pull it up herself.  Like pp said, lots of playing in the day (you can get DS to 'hide' under the covers to encourage him to pull it up) and just waiting it out.  Have you considered if anything else could be bothering him instead?  What about routine?  Does he still nap?

Thanks for the suggestions. We are trying to teach him to pull it up, he is not quite there yet. I'll definitely look into gro bedding!

About his routine, I'm not sure anymore. He still naps, and we recently started to cap the nap at 45 min. (S 1-1.45, BT 7 ) Do you think it could be time to drop the nap?

Do you tuck it in under the mattress at all? Small man moved to a BBB recently and wanted a duvet instead of grobag. Like you though, he moves a lot - we tuck it in securely under the mattress at both sides and it has worked a treat.

What time is WU?  It could be the nap is interfering with his nights now....

I tuck it in firmly on one side, so he can easily find it and pull it on. I have tried tucking it under the mattress on both sides but he somehow manages to get out and then can't get back in...
This morning he woke at 5 and didn't resettle. I'm worried he is getting OT as well as frustrated over the duvet.
I guess this weekend will be a duvet training camp.

Up until very recently his routine was WU 6.30, an hour nap at 1 pm, BT 7. He then started to have EW, which for him usually is a sign it's time to cap the nap a bit. So we started to cap the nap at 45 mins, and had a few mornings with a decent WU. But then just a few days later, he started asking for the duvet and the NW and EW started.

Hmm, could be a bit of OT crept in from capping?  But I guess it could just be the duvet as well.  How have the last couple of nights been?  Is it worth allowing him a one-off slightly longer nap to rule out OT?

Thanks for the suggestion, it might be worth to have a longer nap to keep the OT monster away.
The last few days his sleep has been all over the place due to illness. Last night he had a really good sleep though, from 7.15 to 6.30 without NW or EW. We'll see what happens when he is fully recovered, when we can stick to the 45 min nap.
