Early waking and 30 min naps
« on: April 07, 2014, 10:17:37 am »
So my 9 month old lo used to wake at 7 and was in bed between 630-7 and would on average take one hour nap and one 30 min nap. Lately he's waking at 6 no matter wgat time he goes to bed and I'm getting two 30 min naps which is a very long day for him. He's staying up more in between naps which I thought was normal beibg that he's getting bigger but the naps are awful and so is the early A time. One day he took at 2 hour nap which he never does from 930-1130 and refused the second nap all together and was up from 1130 until bedtime. Help I've tried to reduce A times but being that his first nap is so early that's not working. Here's an example:

6 wake
930- 10 nap
145-215 nap
630 bed. I've tried to put him to bed earlier and also later to see how his A time is and it's still 6 am. What can I do. Seems like he's stuck. He's definetly doing more A time but what should a day lol like?  Even if sometimes he sleeps for an hour in morning it still makes his second nap from 2-230. Thanks

This morning he was up at 6 I put him in crib for nap at 915 he fell asleep at 920-950. I'm not sure why I'm getting this awful 30 min nap. What time should I put him down for second nap? 120 is 3.5 hrs A time and if he does his usual 30 min nap he will be up at 150!!

I'm guessing if it's been going on a while then the 30 min naps are because he has a build up of OT.

I would suggest if the am nap is short you try a much shorter second A time (as he's probably completely OT already by the second nap), so the day would look something like:

6am wake
9.30-10 nap
12.30/1pm nap and hope for a long one!
Really EBT if both naps are short.  Or 6.30 if the second nap is good.

What do you think?  Can you ever resettle a short nap?

No he won't ever resettle. His second nap was from 120-230 but it's still a long time until bed. What time should I put him to sleep? Is that why on occasion he will take a 2 hr nap from built up ot? I've extended A times because he was not falling asleep when I put him down for nap in crib and I thought at 9 months he should be able to handle more A time. Thanks :)

I'd give 6pm a go or even 5.30pm if you're brave enough just for a night or two to help with catching up x

Even if he doesn't seem tired or stays awake in crib for a while ? I hope he doesn't wake at 5 am! Lol. Going forward what should I try to do as far as A times we are now doing 3 hrs 15-30 min before morning nap as well as afternoon. Is it too much A time ? How did we get into this ot cycle ? If I keep getting early 30 min naps do I cut back his A time to 3 hrs? He just never seems ready for a nap at that time. If he wakes at 6 and gives me only one hour to one and a half hours day sleep do I aim for a 12 hr day and put him to bed at 6? It seems so early.  Why am I getting early morning wake times ? Thanks again :)

He went to bed at 6-615 and slept through until 610 am. But how will I get him back on track to a 7 am wake up? Today was the first time I didn't read him books before nap. He seemed tired and his teeth were bothering him so I gave him Tylenol changed his diaper and put him in his crib and he fell right asleep without any winding down time. If I get a 30 min nap I know it's not ot and I'll try for a shorter A time msybe before his afternoon nap. Would you say a 3 hr as opposed to a 3.5 hour?

So for two nights I did EBT and the third day he woke at 725 which was great thought we were in the clear and he did an hour nap and a 30 min nap which for him is good then yesterday he woke a little earlier at 640 had two bad naps 40 min and a 30 min and today he's up at 6 am! Ugh what's going on?! What else can I try? It's such a long exhausting day when his total day sleep is 1 hr 10 mins!!

When he woke at 7.25 what A times did you do?  When he doesn't nap well do you stick to a shorter day?

If his teeth are bothering him at the moment then it's very hard to tweak the routine.  But I would say if you do 3h15-30 before the am nap and consistently get a short nap then you (a) need to do around a 3h second A time on those days to prevent OT and (b) probably need to work on pushing the first nap out a little more.  We were at 3h45-4h by 9 months to get a good nap.

The other thing I'd say is if LO seems very tired before a nap and falls asleep very easily, that doesn't mean they're not OT.  They can just be crashing - my LO will often go to sleep quite easily when OT.

The day he woke at 725 he went down for his first nap at 10:55-12 then he was awake until 725 wake until
335-405 so that was 3 hrs 35 min a time and only got a 30 min nap ( but when he does a decent nap in am which for him is min of an hour he always only does a 30 min afternoon nap ). Then I fed him at put him to bed at 715. He almost always does a 12 hr day because his naps are so short.
Yesterday he took a 30 min nap in am so I put him down 3 hrs later but he was up in his crib for 20 mins and only slept 40 mins ( he never takes a 40 min nap). Yes his teeth are bothering him. I feel like he's always "teething" lately. There's ajways a tooth working it's way down. He's gotten 6 teeth since Christmas. This morning he was so tired and cranky he woke at 605 and I out him down for nap at 915 and he fell right asleep. I couldn't push the first nap today but normally he's at 3.5 hrs a time. How can I tell though if it's ut?  What should I do for second nap?  He's also not drinking much of his 3 pm bottle about 3-4 oz tops.
