2yr old Refuses blankets or anything in his crib
« on: May 04, 2014, 17:00:59 pm »
So DS is turning 2 in 2 weeks and at some point we'll transition him to a BBB. Not right now but I'm starting to think ahead and he HATES and I mean with a Capital H blankets in his crib. In fact he hates having anything in his crib but himself.  I have offered lately a stuffed animal that he does seem to like (although no real attachement) at nap or BT and I place it in his crib. He'll actually scream and throw it out. He gets mad if I put anything in there with him. How in the world do I give him any comfort item if he hates having it in there.  i'm not so worried about now but when I transition him to a bbb if he hates blankets how am I going to get him used to blankets and sheets?

Nothing.. He literally hates covers. Even when he's just laying in bed with me watching tv or something he doesn't want them on him. The only time he's ever had a blanket on was once a few months ago when he was sick he let me wrap him in a blanket for all of 10 minutes.  He wears fleece pajamas right now and we have to keep the heat high which is killing my oil bill.

Sorry I don't know how or why that came out as it did. What it was meant to say was why not take him to buy a sy sleeping bag of his choice - you could tell him that's what big boys have in BBBs?

My DS1 also did not like blankets at all.  We usually dressed him in warmer clothes for night and luckily in our condo, there are separate heat controls in the bedrooms, so I can adjust the heat in his room over night.  I tried once to put a heavier blanket on his bed, but no go.  Then I found an old knitted lightweight blanket that a friend had made for him as a baby, and that one he tolerated. :).  So you could maybe experiment with different weights of blankets?  I like the idea of having him help pick out the blanket for his new bed.  I also tried incorporating a blanket into our play time to get him more interested in it.  You could put it out in the floor to sit on, take it to a couch or chair to snuggle with/read books with, etc.  Then maybe he would become more attached to it?

s!@!@*y sleeping bag
lol I'm dying to find out what this is - I think you'll have to spell it out with spaces to by-pass the sensor.

Oh hang on I got it...
S W A N K Y sleeping bag  ;D

I didn't really have a problem with DS adjusting to blankets but I have been thinking why that was, and it might have been because I used to go in at my BT (also as the temp started to drop as it was night time, heating going off etc) and pop a blanket on him whilst he slept. I think he got used to it in his sleep rather than when awake but waking up with it over him in the morning might have helped too.  I also used those fleecy pjs/sleep suit with a cotton sleep suit underneath.

My DD is the same way all of a sudden. She's just 3, and has been in sleep sacks since she was born. All blankets were thrown on the floor. But she was fine with sleepsacks, until a few weeks ago. Last night she took her sleep sack AND pajama pants off. She refuses blankets, but I think I'll put her in fleece one piece pjs and then throw a blanket on her when I go to bed.
Have you tried a sleep sack?

Yep Creations you got it  ;D See what you get for posting on the run from your phone!!

re: sleep sacks - R who is 34m still sleeps in one but I figured you may need something bigger - hence the suggestion of going of yo by a sy or s!@!@*y sleeping bag. I just thought if there was an element of fun and choice you him re: what he's going to sleep it with you selling it to him on the basis of that's what BB's have in their beds, he may go for it?

Worth a try, maybe?

I'm sort of a part of the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it club' so I think if he doesn't like anything in there and he's not waking because he's cold, then don't worry too much about it.  My DS doesn't sleep with any blankets either (though, he'll allow them in the crib) - I usually check on him before I got to bed and cover him up, but he always takes it off in the night.

I think maybe because a BBB is a whole different 'experience' he'll maybe think about it differently with covers vs blankets in a crib.

Have you thought about having a space heater in his room?  Might help saving on heating costs overall :)

yeah we did think about the space heater but had so much going on it just never happened. :/  Given we are appraoching summer we wont need it now. I was wondering what the heck was being censored.. HAHA TOO FUNNY.

I think sleeping bag here refers to something entirely different that what you meant.  I kind of agree with you now Lindsay if it aint broke don't fix it.  I just think maybe if he had something to sooth or cuddle with in the bed he might not scream so loudly for me in the AM. Probably wishful thinking.

Hopefully come big boy time he'll be ok with it as we'll pick out his bedding like H suggests and he'll take more ownership of it.. He's just so opinionated about it I mean literally Screams and demands it be taken out LOL. It's actually kind of funny.
