4.5 month old NW habitbor hunger
« on: May 01, 2014, 19:34:52 pm »
Hi there. First of all I must thank all who post on this board.  Its really supportive.
Dd is 19 weeks and until 14 weeks was sleeping until 5 or 6 or even after 7 consistently. Then she started  waking randomly and over a few weeks this has become consistent to approx 3.30. And maybe 5.30 and then 6.30.  I think the initial trigger for waking was a change in feeding on the advice of LC. Dd was prone to wind/colic and LC recommended single sided feeding to reduce effects of over active letdown.  While switching to this, I think DD may have been hungry while we made the adjustment.  LC advised not to feed her ) as she had been sleeping so well). So I tried pat/shh and giving her a soother and this worked sometimes.  It works less than half the time now. If she does go back to sleep, she'll wake again at 4.30 bit will then go until 7.30 On a good day.
Bedtime is 7.30 /8pm with DF at 11.
The DF is usually formula 4 oz or Ebm - formula does not result in longer sleep
Interestingly we skipped the DF twice this week -once because DH was to tired and once because we arrived back from a trip and Bt was 9pm-and she slept until 3 both times.
Oh and I forgot to say apart from DF she is Bf.
I admire all you super BF moms who code so well with night feeding -or is that just my perception? I don't cope so well with it. I'm just so completely exhausted with 2 kids that I feel hungover all the time and time is just flying by and I want to stay enjoying the precious time with DD rather than 'coping' if that makes sense? When I manage a little day time nap myself I'm fine and all is good.  I do like Bf and would like to continue
Well following my rant I'd v like your opinions on whether should accept NW or try to change it at this stage.
Many thanks

What does her daytime routine look like? Are you feeding at the other nw's or just the df? It is pretty normal for a bf baby to need those feeds overnight.

There re some more ideas for dealing with Overactive letdown here Oversupply and Overactive (Forceful) Let-Down

It is common to have 2 NFs at this age. Have you told the LC she is waking more at night?

Many LOs are great night sleepers early on but start to wake as their sleep patterns change around 3-4mo. They start sleeping more in cycles and spending less time in deep sleep.

Thanks ali and Heidi.
Yes I usually feed her when she wakes. I tried getting her to go back to sleep but it works less and less so im considering not attempting this at all and just feed her to save time and energy! I told the LC about the night waking and it was she who advised trying to get her to go back to sleep without a feed.  That was a few weeks ago though and I havent been in touch with her since. I think I agree with you about the lighter sleeping too.  It makes sense. So maybe she needs to learn to self settle ? Not sure.  Confused.
DD IS  much more settled during the day I have to say and not upset by wind etc.
Of note I had her weighed today andshe is only gaining 2oz or80g per week over the past few weeks.  The nurse
assures me this is fine and she weighs 6.41kg or 14lb 4oz having been born at 8lb 3oz with big weight gain in the first 2 months. TBh she looks v healthy and chubby. DS1 dropped quite a bit down the centiles while I Bf him for 9 months and though he was monitored by a paediatrian, he is fine- just small.
I'll post my EASY when I've time.
B

Yes if she can learn to self settle she should be able to resettle better at night if she isn't hungry.
