NW during nap transition
« on: May 02, 2014, 14:52:40 pm »
Hi all,

As always, I turn to you for help.

I just switched my 17 month old to 1 nap. It happened during vacation and now we're home and his sleep has gone very wonky. He doesn't seem too tired before or after the nap so I'm sure he was ready for the switch but now he wakes up at night crying for me. As soon as I put my hand on him, he calms down but gets hysterical if I leave again. Last night, he was up 11-1. Every time he fell back asleep, he'd wake himself up to see if I'm there. He also has trouble falling asleep at bedtime until I WI/WO a few times which we didn't need to do before. I'm not sure if this is due to the nap change or because he got used to being near me during vacation. Any ideas how to remind him how to fall asleep on his own again?

Our routine is:
6:30-7 wake up
7:30 breakfast
9 milk
11 snack
11:30 nap about 1.5 hours
1 lunch
3 milk
5:30 dinner
7 bedtime

Just to add to my question - what should I concentrate on now, having him fall asleep calmly so he gets used to the new nap time (even if it involves me soothing him the whole time) or reminding him how to fall asleep independently so we don't create new props? I feel like both those things can't be done at once.

Hi,

I could be that he's starting the 18sr a tad early - UT sounds like typical sr behaviour ime.

If you think he's bit tired enough to nap, what about mjving the nap closer to 12noon? This should help re: BT as well as he's being pushed linger in the morning yk?

What do you think?

Hena

Thank you for the reply, Hena.
I'm surprised that you think it's UT. What I meant by him not being tired before the nap is that he's not cranky but he's definitely ready to sleep and would do so if I put him down even earlier. I'm actually concerned that he's becoming OT which is causing all the wakings. Is his one nap of 1.5 hours (at the most) long enough to last him through the day? Do you think I should continue pushing for 1 nap or revert to 2 naps which didn't cause these problems?
