Ebf advice please
« on: May 04, 2014, 09:01:42 am »
Hi ladies I need some advice, my baby girl is 6 1/2 weeks old she is ebf at the moment, she's putting on plenty of weight about 12lb now and nurses on demand.  She wakes to feed a lot at night even though I feed her a lot during the day, I get maybe 2-3 hours the first stretch of sleep then every hour she's waking and from 4 am ish I have to put her in our bed with me to nurse and sleep as I'm shattered, I have a 2 1/2 yr old son who's a nightmare all day long so can't nap during the day either.  When can I start the easy? Also for the activity how do I do this with a young baby and for how long? She seems to feed then straight back to sleep at the moment. Any advice? Any suggestions for getting her to go longer stretches at night? I make sure there's lots of light/ noise during the day and quiet dark with white noise at night, I'm just so tiered. Many thanks

Also when I nurse she feeds maybe 5-15 mins max I have a very fast let down and sometimes she chokes on my milk. But at night ESP and sometimes in the day she will feed fall asleep I put her down then she wakes straight away or after a very short nap and feeds again.

Check out these links and see what you think.
Oversupply and Overactive (Forceful) Let-Down
Starting EASY - all you need to know and more!

Do you think you could be interpreting her tired cry as hunger and really she just needs help getting (back) to sleep?

Does she take a soother/paci?

Well I keep trying the dummy but she won't take it. When she wakes I can hear her sucking her fist or lookin for boob. What age should I start easy?

We have a similar problem regarding the dummy.

Our DS was given a dummy in NICU as he was nil by mouth for his first 3 days while he had an operation and they needed to give him something to keep him calm and to keep his sucking reflexes.

The dummy they used was a Gumdrop dummy. I'd never seen or heard of them before and they look very strange but he now won't take a different dummy and doesn't like soothing on the breast due to getting buckets of milk when all he wants is comfort! These dummy's are really good for breastfed babies as they are like a hollow silicone rather than normal dummy's which tend to be bigger and harder.

Might be worth a look?

I would probably say IMHO that you would do well to try and get your LO to nap in the day, I know it's hard (I've got a nearly 4 yr old, a 2 yr old and my little 8 week old) but I really do find with mine that the more sleep they have, the more sleep they need. HTH  :)

Sorry Ali just realised there were links in your reply. I don't know how il be able to do easy as my baby girl feeds so often, I try to drag her out but she just cries and routes around, also she naps for short periods now which doesn't help and she then wants feeding after she wakes how can I get her to go longer between feelings? And nap longer? She will sleep on me but in her crib she will only sleep a short nap usually. She's always falling asleep after a feed

She's pretty little still...we did the majority of naps in a  wrap up to about 12 weeks or so. I always tried the crib/bassinet first but went to the wrap if it was not working. It took a few different tries with different styles of soothers before we found one that worked.

Also check out this FAQ on easy in the first few weeks. Breastfeeding and EASY in the first few weeks

Easy can be started at any age but of course depends on the baby ;)

I think at first and each bay is different what´s important is the order of EASY not so much the 3 hour mark, i would feed my baby and start taking clothing off if he fell asleep before he was dome eating to make sure he was full, babies this age don´t get a lot of A time just looking around is activity to them try to keep her up after a feeding even for 5 min, tickle her feet gently talk to her, and then you can let he go back to sleep, maybe she will need this to be 2 hour easy until she can pull the 3 hour stretch mark, during the day if she sleeps more that the 3 hour, wake her and feed her, at night of course let her sleep,

hope this helps best of luck
