Short Morning A time and 30 min nap, every day!
« on: June 02, 2014, 14:03:32 pm »
Hi,

I am new here, just read the book and am in the middle of sorting out a huge mess of a nap schedule on top of hourly night wakings. So far so good but I have lots of questions!

LO is 16 weeks (adjusted age 12.5). She wakes for the day at 7:30, very alert and happy. She consistently starts showing tired cues about 30-45 minutes after waking and ends up falling asleep shortly after for exactly 30 min. Her A time is almost always an hour exactly and nap time is almost always 30 min exactly. Her next A time and nap are appropriate lengths for her age. Afternoon is a mess and is usually a few CNs and not one long nap. Very inconsistent S and A times. Is the short morning EASY messing everything up for the day? What to do?

E 7:30
A 7:45
S 8:30

E 9:00
A 9:15
S 10:30

Hi Annie (and baby Ivy, I'm presuming :) )
Welcome both of you to BW, hope you find the support and info here that you need :)

My initial feeling on reading your post is that Ivy is just still in a very sleepy stage.  Have you ever tried keeping her up later than the 30 mins in the morning?  What happened?

You say her age needs to be adjusted - was she a preemie?  If so, then I would expect her to keep her 'sleepiness' for a while yet, she has lots of growing to do.  Just try to get the EAS pattern going well, that's all you can do til they're ready for some A, yk.

What sort of night is she doing? What time is BT and how many NW/NF is she having? Just wondering if it could be a case of her seeing that first feed as a NF and the first nap as an extension of her night sleep because she is not quite rested enough to start the day just yet.

Is she swaddled? Also wondering if she is more prone to startling in the morning and whether HTTJ (pressure at the jolts) and/or wake to sleep could help. There is info on both methods here. How do I address habitual wakings? (wake-to-sleep and other methods)

Thanks for the replies. She is 16 weeks and was born 3.5 weeks early. Developmentally she is at about 16 weeks but her weight is still closer to her adjusted age.

She wakes at 6-6:30 most days and I do feed her and put her right back down because she always seemed too tired to be up for the day. She is now used to that and falls right back asleep until 7-7:30. At that point, she is wide awake, grinning, babbling, ready for the day. I get her up, feed her only if hungry (50/50 on this because of the 6am feed), get her dressed and play until she's tired. She is always eyes closed asleep an hour on the dot after she wakes up and awake again 30 min on the dot after that.

This morning I tried leaving her in bed and giving her the pacifier and a toy to see if she would wind herself down and finish her night sleep. She dozed off for about 5 minutes and was back awake again, so I got her up. She then fell asleep an hour later for 30 min as usual.

Night sleep is bad. We are working on it. She is going down at about 7. We have put her in bed as early as 6, depending on tired cues. She will fall asleep but then wakes up, needs settling, and falls back asleep for good at 7. She wakes every 2-3 hours all night long, occasionally sleeping through the first one. We can settle her with the pacifier during every other waking and but she won't settle without being fed on the others. She does self settle during her naps.

It is common to have a shorter first A time especially is the night isn't the most restful.

Do you think wake to sleep could work?
