23 month old having 3.5-4 hour naps - should I be worried?
« on: August 27, 2014, 22:12:03 pm »
My DS went from having 2 hour naps and 11 hour nights, to having 3-4 hour naps and 11 hour nights. Not every day, but probably 70% of the time over the past two weeks. Just wondering if anyone else has had this?

Hmm could be a growth spurt or an illness coming on? How is he when awake? Do you think his sleep quality is still good or does he seem tired/off?

He's fine when he's awake, but seems very tired by lunch time. I'm working so don't really know but according to my mom he's tired at noon and yesterday was whiny/clingy. It's been going on for two weeks now. Some days it's 2.5 hours, other days 3, and other days 4!

Well my middle DD always took 2-3 hr naps but 4 seems excessive. Also she stopped napping as much after she had a tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy - the dr figured she had mild apnea that was preventing her from getting quality sleep so instead she went for quantity. But she slept like that for a long time!

We had a huge (temporary) increase in sleep needs around the 2y birthday - could be that?

It seems that when he's at my mom's (4 days a week) he sleeps 3.5 hours, and when he's home Friday to Sunday, he sleeps just over 2 hours. It's weird!

Odd...could.it be something environmental? Noise or temperature?

Silly question but do you know for sure he's sleeping the full 11h at night? Just wondering if he could be having some UT NWs or EWs where he just lies quietly, so is using the long nap to make up for it?

He's actually only sleeping 10.5 hours at night. 7:30 BT and wake up around 6am now. If he's awake I definitely hear him. Maybe he takes a bit to fall asleep at night, but I never hear anything other than a bit of singing for a few minutes. And when he's up in the morning he calls me right away. I always tell him to lie down for a bit and he'll lay quietly for about 15 minutes.
He's in the basement at my parents, which is a little cooler than home but just as dark. He's been napping there for months now but it's just in the past couple weeks he's been having 3.5-4 hour naps.

my little girl is 21 months and exactly the same at the moment. Yesterday she went for her nap at 1 and i had to wake her at 5! She just seems to go thru phases of sleeping more or less although has always been high sleep needs. Is your little boy? I did think it unusual that she sometimes has a nap that long and still tired for bed but like i say i think it's just a phase. Maybe their body needs extra sleep around this age for some reason

My DS always sleeps more when he's having a growth spurt.  Never that much, but if he was high sleep needs to begin with and he's adding to that it could be possible.  How is he eating?  I think having low iron can make you sleepy?
