Help! Is there a 3 year sleep regression?
« on: September 13, 2014, 07:52:17 am »
Hi,
do you know if there's a 3 year sleep regression? My lo turned 3 on july 5th + 5 weeks ago her sleep suddenly went awful :-(
She was sleeping 12 hrs a night or more if ages had a tiring day. So she slept 6.30pm-6.30am usually.

Now I'm lucky if she sleeps 11 hrs + she's slept after 6am three times in 5 weeks. At first she had a cold so put it dwn to that but after she got better her sleep didn't change. She's so tired but just wont sleep + usually wakes during the night briefly too. If she wakes around 5.30am which happens a lot she wont go back to sleep but waits happily in before till 'morning' on her clock.
We're trying to put her to bed early but she just messes around loads so takes 45 mins before she's asleep.

She stopped her naps completely months ago but shes been so tired she's had a few sleeps in the car + buggy but they've not helped coz she's takes so long to fall asleep at night then has no more than 10 hrs sleep at night so wakes tired again the nx day.

She started pre-school two weeks ago also so she's prob even more tired from that too now!

Any advice? If it is a regression I guess I just ride it out? x

Hi! R turned 3 on 8th July and we too had a wonky patch. She still naps so we tried tweaking that, no joy so we just had to ride it out. Her naps tbh have been our saving grace, ESP in PS days. Her sn have dropped bty she seems to still need the DTS so we are rolling with it. So her day looks like this ATM:

WU: 6.15 (out of bed at 7am)
Nap: 2pm (capped at one hour)
BT: 7pm (asleep by 7.15)

Yup we had one just before or after 3 (can't remember) then again at the 1/2 yr GS/developmental period.

Thanks.
Really hoping we can sort it soon. I feel like she's so overtired she cant sleep but dunno how to get past it. She woke yesterday at 5.20am so had a 10.5 hr night + she hadn't had a nap either. We were out in the car at lunchtime + it still took her 40 mins driving to fall asleep. At night she used to take 5-10 mins now its more like 30 mins + that's without a nap :-( x

Is it worth giving the odd nap in the week even if it's aprop'd. I know it's not ideal tongi back as it were but for R OT just makes things worse re: NW/Short nights and she never truly caches up with a longer night as she's too wired. X

She has been having the odd nap day but Im not sure if its just making things worse + I'm never sure what time to put her to bed after with her being so overtired but always having short nights after a nap day.xx

I don't know if in the best person to answer this as R's NNDs are few and far between. We tend to stick to a 12h day on a NND, so BT at 6.15pm (asleep by). So maybe allow her the odd nap, capped even at 1hour if you think that won't mess the night up and your usual BT or not let her nap and do a few 6pm BT. Also at least that way if she plays up, she's in bed earlier o help get some of the shenanigans out of the way?
