5 month old nap question plse
« on: August 20, 2014, 13:10:23 pm »
Hello, my gorgeous daughter is 5 months 2 weeks. She has started sleeping well over night (1 feed) and has even sleep all the way through the night 3 times  :)
I see on the ideal EASY 4 hour schedule that she should nap for 1.5-2 hours twice a day and a cap nap of 30-45 mins (is that correct?) she never sleeps for that long but wakes refreshed, smiling and babbling after about 45-50 mins.. Is that ok? Could it be that she just doesn't need such long naps?
Second question is...how should her shorter naps fit into a 4 hour EASY? Should she then sleep again 4 hours after she woke up or from the start of the sleep? And how long should she be awake for?
Sorry, one more question... her bedtime routine involves her laying in her cot with fairy lights on whilst I read her to sleep. Is it ok to do the same thing at nap times? I read on her that its not good to read to sleep but I'm not sure why. Than you ladies for your advice! This website is great!

What is her current A time?  45min naps are usually a sign that they are UT (especially if she wakes happy) so it may be time to push her awake time to get her naps to lengthen a bit and then her EASY might settle into place a bit better.

Awake time is categorized by 'eyes opened to eyes closed' so, from the moment she wakes until the moment she falls asleep is A time.

I don't see anything wrong with reading to her right now.  You may want to watch that it does become a prop when she's older and that she can fall asleep independently, but no harm in bedtime/nap time stories :)

We are having this exact same issue with our DD who is the same age. I was actually just about to post a similar question, so I was happy to see your question here. For the past couple of days she has only napped 45 minutes at a time which, as you know, throws the whole day off. I am in the process of trying to extend her A time by 15-20 minutes or so, even if she is showing me very visible signs that she is tired. I'll let you know how it goes! She has had naps as recently as 5 days ago that have been the standard 1.5-2 hours (and I haven't had to intervene at the 45 minute mark), so I know she is capable of doing it...I think it's just a matter of striking that balance between UT and OT. It's tough, especially when they wake up from a short nap SO awake!  :P

As far as reading to sleep goes, you may want to look at moving reading further up in her wind down time, so she can still associate drowsiness with it, but not be dependent on it to sleep. Perhaps follow it with a few minutes of sitting quietly in the dark and then put her down awake. I speak from experience as a fellow prop-to-sleeper (in our case it was nursing), it isn't easy at first but they do eventually get the hang of it, and from everything I've read on this forum, the sooner you can teach them to fall sleep on their own, the better. Shush-pat has definitely helped us in this transition! But as Lindsay27 said, there is likely no harm in reading to her now...just be aware that it could become a prop.

Keep us posted on how she does with napping and the extended A times!

Hi *LRayWag*... My dd is now 6 months old and for the time being she's taking good naps in her cot  :) I think what worked was extending her A time and now she is having some solids she goes to bed with a full tum. At the start of working on her naps, I took her out in the pram for three days running in the morning, I made sure she was in the pram ready to nap at 2.5 hours from waking and kept walking for at least and hour so that she would get used to sleeping (not sure of that is necessary). I noticed that she would fall asleep at 3hours from waking so tried putting her down at home between 2.5 and 3 hr A from waking which worked. She doesn't last that long in the next A, maybe 2 hours as seems to get very tired after eating her solids lunch. We are still doing a cat nap but I have been advised on here, that she is at the age when she might drop the cat nap soon. How are you getting on? At the moment she is sleeping a good 1.20 nap in the morning and approx 2 hours after lunch.

Re: me reading her to sleep. Sometimes I do stop just before she goes off. How do I know if it's a prop? She currently has one night feed. She lays in her cot whilst I read to her and falls asleep in there. Do you think I should try and work on her putting herself to sleep? Or because she is laying on her own when she falls asleep is she sort of doing this now?
