Baby can't make it through more than 1 sleep cycle
« on: September 17, 2014, 20:19:56 pm »
I just posted yesterday about my 6 week old not napping well. Today I tried extended his A time to an hour and a half even though he shows sleep cues before that. Im getting him to sleep easier but he is still waking around 20-30 min each time. For his second and third naps he looked around for a while after waking and eventually fell back asleep. For his third nap he has woken every 20-30 min, for and hour and a half (3-4 times total). He is obviously tired but can't seem to make the transistion from one sleep cycle to the next. Any suggestions?

Sorry you haven't had a reply yet.
WUs after 20 mins are usually caused by discomfort or OT. 1.5hrs is probably too long for a 6wo especially after a short nap so I'd go back to following his sleep cues and try to have him down by 1hr15.

Does he have a paci/dummy?

Any intolerance or reflux that could be causing discomfort?

Is the room dark enough? Is he swaddled?

He is swaddled and I've gotten the room as dark as possible without buying blackout shades. He has a paci but really doesn't like it that much and can't seem to keep it in by himself. When he does take it, he wakes immediately if it falls out and cries, so I can easily see it becoming a prop. He has reflux so I propped his mattress up. He has been on Zantac for almost 2 weeks and it is helping so much! I'm wondering if that is still the problem though. Maybe he just needs to be on it longer? In the past few days he has been able to resettle and fall back asleep several times (which is a major improvement), but he is still waking at the end of each sleep cycle.

There is a good FAQ here on helping LO transition through the cycles. Short naps - why does my baby wake after 20 minutes?

I wouldn't be surprised if the reflux were still at play though.
