Confused - Think 16 mo. might be nap dropping?
« on: October 18, 2014, 14:35:43 pm »
Hi,
My DD has been on EASY since 6 weeks and most of the time it has been great!  She's been on the following for at least 6 months with no problems

7 Wake with snack
9 Breakfast
10-11:30 Nap 1
11:30 Snack
1:15 Lunch
2:30-4 Nap 2
5:30 Dinner
7 Bed routine
7:30 Bed

For the last month, she has usually taken 2 full 1.5 hour naps with an occasional day or 2 where she will take 1 1.5 hour nap and 1 40 min. nap.  I asked her Dr. about nap dropping and she said, "You'll know when she is ready."  She gets in bed at 7:30 and is usually asleep by 8 at the latest- every once in a while it's longer.

Yesterday, she just talked to herself in bed, hit her head on the headboard and rolled around during her 2nd nap.  My mother-in-law is with her while I am at work, and she said since she didn't cry she just left her in there.

Today, as soon as I started the first nap process she started to scream.  She never screams - she is very happy almost all of the time.  It's now 10:30 and she is still up - crying off and on and won't seem to communicate what she needs - so I am wondering if she needs to drop a nap and consolidate?

Help!

If she drops a nap, what is the suggested EASY routine with 1 nap (meals included)?
Should I just drop it cold turkey or transition somehow?

I remember transitioning naps but that was so long ago we went from 3-2 that I struggle to remember.

Also, I wasn't sure if she is just having a fussy morning (which would be odd for her) or if she is trying to tell me only 1 nap!

Right now, she is looking at books happily and not crying anymore, but if I approach her she starts to fuss...almost as if she thinks I will put her in bed.

Going to move this one to toddler sleep for you, hun, as LO is over 12 mos. :)

Need to dash right now but I would say that she is old for two naps, the vast majority of LOs will be on one nap by now, so she may be undertired - which is what rolling about talking to herself sounds like to me.

Have a read here:
From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

I agree, most lo's are on one nap by now or well on their way to one nap. I have only ever transitioned cold turkey as I don't have the patience to faff around with A times and luckily have had three kids who handle ot really well. Our routine on one nap is roughly like this right now:

7/7:30 wake up - morning milk & breakfast
9:30 snack
11:30/12:00 lunch
12:30/1:00 nap (for an hour, she is lsn)
2:30/3:00 snack
5:30 supper
6:30/7:30 bedtime milk
8:00 bed

Basically by force yesterday, we had to try cold turkey.  She pretty much fell asleep in her lunch and after the first eye rub we cleaned up and went to bed, but she was OT and wouldn't go to sleep for a LONG time, when she did, she slept for 2 hours, but still looked out of sorts when she woke up.

She looked out of sorts and tired until bedtime (which we moved up), but played happily and ate a ton for dinner.

Today we are trying to shorten the pm nap and lengthen the am nap.  She is napping now, we'll see how it goes.

I don't think cold turkey will work for her, she was so upset and OT yesterday and she is almost always happy-go-lucky.

I just ordered the BW Toddler book on Amazon, but does anyone know what routine Tracey suggests with 1 nap?

For now, I am going to add 15-20 minutes to her first A time every 3 days until the pm nap basically disappears, but I don't know if it will work and if she will sleep long enough with just 1 nap.
