What to do when you aren't home for nap time?

What to do when you aren't home for nap time? My 16 mo lo won't sleep anywhere but in his crib or a quick snooze in the car possibly. Today we weren't home and he only slept for 20 mins from 240-310! Do you just do earlier bedtime? He was up at 7 today. Also this week I'll be out again at nap time and I'm unsure what to do.

Medi will sleep for half an hour in the car or in a sling, but that's it. I try to get her to bed a bit earlier at bedtime and she's usually ok.
