18 month sleep regression question
« on: October 26, 2014, 23:14:02 pm »
Hi friends--thanks to this board, my daughter (who is two days shy of 18 months) is sleeping about 11 hours at night and about 1.5 to 2 hours during her one nap. So awesome!
As a person prone to anxiety, I'm all worked up about the 18 month sleep regression. Is it inevitable? There is page after page on this board of support for it. I think my anxiety is because I've always been a troubled sleeper and I don't want to pass that on to my daughter, so I've religiously followed this board and Tracey's advice.
Is there any one out there who didn't have this regression? Or anyone who did who can tell me it's not so bad? I know there are others out there with way worse issues than this and I'm sorry to take up room on the board for something that hasn't even happened yet. I've just been freaking out a little and was hoping for some reassurance!

Hi honey, don't worry about asking this, all questions are good questions if they are troubling you.

Unfortunately I can't say with certainty that the 18 month regression won't affect your LO, but I can reassure you that it's not all bad with all children. I think my DD did struggle a bit with it, but most of our troubles were around the 15 month mark which coincided with dropping to one nap and starting at nursery so lots could have been due to those changes. We'll be here to help you if her sleep does take a backwards step though. ((Hugs))

I too suffer with anxiety about things relating to my DD and have done for a long time even before she was born. Have you spoken to anyone professional about how you feel? If it is a big worry for you, there might be some medicines that could help and/or other talking therapy support out there. I only say this as I have found these things helpful, over time.

Thank you so much for your reply and reassurance.
And that is great advice! I currently have a therapist for talking about things and a psychiatrist for  medication stuff. It took 6 years, many, many losses, and a surrogate to get my daughter so there is a lot to work through! I'm very lucky to have a lot of support both personally and professionally on dealing with all of this (including this board!). I'm glad you've found these things helpful too!

You know I have been thinking of this lately as we approach 18 months with DD3 and I know DD1 had some stuff around the 18-20 month mark but nothing too horrible and DD2 had nothing at all that I recall! So hopefully your lo is similar, but nice to know you ha e lots of support to back you up if things do go a bit awry.
