nap times?
« on: February 18, 2015, 12:15:28 pm »
I have a 7 week old baby boy. We are on about a 3 hour easy schedule(it was a great 3 hour easy, then we had a growth spurt last week.) currently I feel like his naps are being cut short, how long should I aim for him to nap?
Here's our current schedule. Wt is 6am
E6-63
A63-730
S730-9
E9-93
A93-1030
S1030-1115 at the latest
This is where it gets all wonky I try to hold of eating until 12, but if he's hungry ill feed him. Because the growth spurt last week I think I am offering the breast more BC I'm afraid he's hungry. So from here on out the eas routine stays the same, but all naps are 30-40 minutes. We start cluster feeding at 3-4 and his last feed will be around 545 with bt at 6.
We dreamfeed at 930-945, then prior to the growth spurt he'd wake at 1 & 4 to eat. The Gs messed everything up and he was waking 1,2,4,&5, but last night he woke at 3 ;D so I'm hopeful we may be making some progress.

I've been reading other posts on here, when he wakes up after 30 minutes or so,  if that isn't enough rest, do I need to shorten his next awake time?

Also, the awake time guidelines, is that total awaketime including feeding? So if he should be awake for an hour, and spend 20 minutes feeding, we should only activity for 40mins? Or is it on top of the feed? So we should activity for the full hour?

First morning nap I held him, we napped for about 1 hr 15 mins.
Second morning nap.
I put him down at 10:13
eyes closed at 10:31
awake at 10:52
I came in and resettled him, set him down at 11:07
 and he woke up.
I continued shush patting, but he was wide awake.
its 11:18, I'm holding him now hes screaming. at 11:30 I'm going to see if hes hungry. wjat do I do for the next eas?

Ok, so what I did for the next EAS, was fed at 11:30. Then put down for nap at 12:17. He's still awake in his moses basket. It usually takes him about 20 minutes to fall asleep. So I'm sitting next to him and about 15 minutes after he falls asleep, I'll start watching him to help transition into deep sleep?

He doesn't have any issue transitioning at night, why are naps different?

Hi there:) Could you post your entire day's routine, please? I know it might be messy but it helps to have the complete picture

when he wakes up after 30 minutes or so,  if that isn't enough rest, do I need to shorten his next awake time?
Yes, a 30 minute nap usually indicates OT (over tiredness) so you can shorten the next A time by 15 minutes or so and try for the next nap. It sounds like he is getting more OT as the day progresses, leading to more short naps. That being said, our day was similar at that point, minus the NWs. The first 2 naps were fine but we ended the day with 2 catnaps:) Nothing worked to sort it out and things only fell into place on dropping to 2 naps + CN at 4 months.

the awake time guidelines, is that total awaketime including feeding? So if he should be awake for an hour, and spend 20 minutes feeding, we should only activity for 40mins? Or is it on top of the feed? So we should activity for the full hour?
A time is total time from eyes open to eyes closed. I was actually going to ask this next - How are you spending the A time? It says 'Activity' but almost everything is overstimulating at that age, and it is a another big factor when assessing short naps. It helps to keep activity minimal and very low key with maybe just 10 minutes of something stimulating like looking at a mobile or a play gym etc. Low key activities include diaper changes, looking out of the window, walking around, strolls in the pram/sling etc

He doesn't have any issue transitioning at night, why are naps different?
Maybe because they are not *as* tired? What is the room he is sleeping in like? Darkness is a great help in extending naps as is white noise and a swaddle. How do you PD for naps? Do you hold till drowsy and PD and leave? Or stay and pat/shuhs?

Well, turns out we've been dealing with some super painful gas issues. Today isn't normal, but they're under control more, but we're still having these short naps. So today
E:6
W6:30-7(this was a diaper change, cuddling in bed, the news was on for about 10 minutes.)
Sleep:7-7:40 With me holding him(which is unusual, usually if we cuddle and sleep that first nap together he'll get until 9.
He screamed and cried until 9:10 and then I nursed bc his eyes were closing from exhaustion.(having some gas issues, at the next feedig we started gas drops which seem to be helping quite a bit.)
9:10-9:21 E(no activity)
9:10-10:10S
And then he slept from 9:30-10:10
E10:10-10:20
S 10:30-11:50
E 12:20-12:46
A 12:46-1:30
S (down for nap at 1:30, eyes closed at 1:50) til 2:22
E 2:32
A: 2:56-Current(3:21), for this we're just laying on the floor looking at the cieling fan.
So that is today, not a normal day.
S His afternoon nap was 4:10-4:32

Our activities usually include looking out the window, maybe spending some time in his bouncy seat or his swing. Or looking at black and white book.

Recently I have started swaddling, sitting while singing his goodnight song, then putting in the bed. Which is exactly what we do at night as well. He goes to sleep better without the shush-pat for naps. So I put him down when he's sleepy(as in given sleepy cues) but not drowsy. If I put him down drowsy, he doesn't go down.

So today isn't a normal schedule. but it what we're dealing with today.

Also, if he wakes early, should I have been doing a low key activity(looking at windows, or fans) until its time for him to eat,

Hugs, hun. This is a difficult phase. It does get better. It really will be hard to get anywhere when he is in discomfort. It's good that you can put him down awake and he will nap, even if it is only a short one. 20 minute naps also could mean he is overtired. I wonder whether he is on more discomfort than you think? Have you gone to a doctor? Yes, if he wakes early, and you simply can't resettle, you can have some low key A time, so essentially you will be doing AEAS
