Naps while out / overtired baby
« on: April 16, 2015, 19:10:24 pm »
Hi!  My DD is 8 weeks, and I have a 3yo DS.  My DD doesn't fall asleep on her own.  Instead she quickly becomes overtired and cries very hard.  Since she's so little, she has a very short A window, and we exclusively BF, which takes up about half of her A time.  It's very hard for us to get out and do our normal activities, like playgroups or library programs, because she cries the whole time.  But I feel bad for my DS because I feel like we've become hermits since the baby was born, and that doesn't seem fair to him (plus I miss hanging out with other adults).  I've tried pacifiers, wearing her, rocking her in her car seat, but nothing makes her sleep while we're out.  At home we tightly swaddle, darken the room, and use loud white noise - conditions that are hard to replicate in public.  Does anyone have any advice for dealing with going out with a baby who won't nap while out?  Do we just need to tough it out until she has longer A times?

Have you tried wrapping her?  That was the only way I could reliably get dd2 to nap while out. It still works now ;)

I have a ring sling and a mei tai, and she doesn't do well in either.  She used to fall asleep in the RS but now if I put her in either, she's content for about 5 minutes, then starts to cry.  I just borrowed an ergo from a friend, haven't tried that one yet.  I wouldn't even mind wearing her if she'd be awake and content, but as soon as she gets OT she starts crying hard, and nothing calms her but our normal routine or nursing.  A lot of times I end up nursing her while we're out, but she'll still usually wake up when she's done and be crabby.  :-\

DS loved the Moby for a snooze, it's really snuggly for newborns :)
