20 week old - hysterical night wakings
« on: April 29, 2015, 11:07:37 am »
Hi All,

Looking for some help please before I lose the plot.

DS2 is flying on his EASY which I will post below but a week ago or more he started waking at night and is hysterical, screaming at the top of his lungs. This tends to happen from 12.30 until 3 or 4. We thought he was hungry but won't take a bottle if it is before 3 or 4 just continues to scream. He is still sleeping in our room and we had started to Shhh him from the bed rather than get up and occasionally that distracts him for a few minutes but we have to keep doing it. We are exhausted.

EASY
Wakes between 7/7.30
E 8
A
S 9.30 (up to 2 hours)
E 12 noon
A
S 1.30 (up to 2 hours)
A
E 4pm
A
S Cat nap up to bed before 6pm and sleeps for 20/30 minutes
A
E 7pm
S 7.30/7.45
He is getting one NF at around 3/4am.

He doesn't always sleep 2 hours but has good long naps, his routine for all naps and night sleep is the same. Up to bedroom. Lie on bed change nappy, into gro bag, blinds closed, book read, music on, into cot awake with his muslin (for snuggles) and a little teddy thing.

The screaming at night as I said starts about 12.30 and is him screaming at the top of his lungs...it is awful especially in the middle of the night.

Any tips?

Your routine seems fine. Does this happen every day? One thing though -- there is a lot of difference between a 20 & 30 minute nap - something to keep in mind.  Are you positive it isn't hunger? Does he normally get a bottle during the day too or are you nursing? Week 19 is a wonder week - did this start around that time?

Happening every night for over a week so started around wonder week 19 but can't see the link to that leap if you know what I mean. He is bottle fed not breast fed but definitely not hungry before 3 he absolutely refuses the bottle. We have to keep shhhhinh him and when he calms down a bit he kind of mantra crys and that sometimes helps him self settle it not its more shushing.

Should have added his nap is generally 30 minutes not 20. Should we cut back to 20?

No no, don't cut back at all. 30-45 minutes is best.
