Incorporating peanuts into BLW?
« on: May 16, 2016, 18:47:56 pm »
We don't eat peanuts much, unless you count as part of DH's breakfast cereal (blech).

The recommendation now is to introduce them early, if I'm correct. But in what? I've looked up recipes for muffins but they all have sugar in!

What about one of the organic peanut butters? Don't think they have sugar?

Meridian is the one I'm thinking of.

I've read that peanut butter is too thick for them at first, don't know if that's right! I'd prefer to give something less concentrated, too.

well my first time around I didn't know any better and I gave E toast with peanut butter on it at about 8 months.  I did put it on very thin and cut the toast into pretty small squares.  I did the same with B

You could use banana or puréed Apple instead of sugar to sweeten the muffin.

Or could you blitz them into a powder and make a breadcrumb type thing for some chicken? Just thinking out loud here

Pretty sure I gave DD1 peanut butter early on and just spread it thinly.

I'd do a thin spread on toast, it shouldn't be too thick. Get the smooth one, there's sugar and salt-free ones.
It's more about them getting some in their mouth to experience so if they find it too thick to eat much of, it should be fine.

I don't have a great deal of time to look for the recipe right now but there are muffin recipes on the recipe board (finger food) which have no sugar added, you can sub the oil/butter part for peanut butter or just mix some through. The basic sugar free muffin recipes are easily adapted to switch the fruits/veg etc that are in them.
You could also mix some peanut butter though some oaty chews (recipe on teh thread, again easily adapted, add anything really!).

WRT safety, I would agree that caution needs to be taken with the texture of peanut butter, first it should be smooth not crunchy and second it needs to be either incorporated or spread very thinly so that a big glob doesn't get caught in LOs mouth causing a possible choke hazard.

Peanut butter is nice added to curry for a satay feel...it need not be spicy, maybe look up some satay sauce recipes and see if you can adapt one for LO?  Or just peanut butter mixed with coconut cream to thin down into a sauce.

I wasn't sure if you meant the peanut butters or the muffin recipes contained sugar.  You can certainly find both sugar free. Sunpat for instance is sugar free, there are other brands too.  also watch for additional oils, salt etc. not all nut butters are equal :)

Thanks, I will take a look. I must confess I am really not a fan of nut butter, so this feels like a right faff and very contrary to the idea of sharing meals. Guess I just get on with it though.

Creations, I meant muffins that were sugar free. At least we'd all eat those!

Recipes on the recipe board then - or look up mamacook recipe blog (our lemonthyme).  Sorry I'm rushed for time but if you don't find them let me know and  I'll be back :)

Meridian smooth PB is sugar free and not very thick in fact.  You can also make muffins and just leave out the sugar, sub in some apple purée or something.
