Anyone here breastfeeding AND pregnant, too??!!!
« on: August 24, 2005, 07:31:41 am »
My precious ds is 8 months, and we just discovered to our joy that I'm pregnant again (about 6 weeks).

I'm still breastfeeding ds and been meaning to for at least 1 year (I am lactose intolerant, and I really want him to wait as long as possible before introducing dairy)... but honestly, I'm started to feel really tempted to wean him.  I'm desperately hungry ALL the time. :x  Right after nursing (he is down to just 4 breastmilk feeds per day), I feel like fainting. I can't believe I'm feeding 3 humans right now.  And I'm a real tiny tiny person, too...!!!  :?

Has anyone of you done this? I know many people have, but I just need to get in touch with a REAL, LIVE person sooooooooooon.

Hiya Jolene

I was nursing my 8 month old dd when I found out I was pregnant with ds. Yes, I was hungry all the time! I tried to make good food choices, ate a ton, and didn't gain weight until she weaned at 1 yr old. So yes, we made it a whole 20 weeks nursing while pregnant! And my midwife was SO supportive, as was my l/c. My dd was milk protein intolerant, and she transitioned to soy milk at about 11 months, and was weaned by 12 months. (She weaned herself, and I cried when she was done   :) )

I was nursing my 8 month ds when I found out I was pregnant with #3, unfortunately that pregnancy ended because it was a molar pregnancy. DS is still nuring, at 13 months, and I am so glad I have stuck it out. I can't imagine how depressed I would have been if I had not still been nursing him when we lost the pregnancy. He is milk/soy intolerant and even when he doesn't nurse his 3 times per day, he drinks ebm from a cup. He is my champion nurser!

You may/may not have heard, around 20 weeks pregnant, your milk lessens and becomes more like the colustrum milk you first produce. This is great for your toddler, although some toddlers will wean at this point. Others go on to keep nursing up to the birth, and continue to "tandem" nurse when baby arrives. A La Leche League support group will give you that "real life" support you crave during this time, I love my LLL group!

You can totally do this! Rest up when your dc naps, eat well, and pamper/take good care of yourself. It is not always easy to be pregnant while chasing a toddler, but to have them so close in age is a true blessing once you get past the hard work.   Take help if offered!

Congratulations!  :D

YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!   :D

Well, I got sooo tired last Friday that I decided to start weaning - so, on Sunday, my DH tried giving DS ebm from a cup as practice but it seriously failed.  :(  And I really don't have strength right now to fight DS with a cup, so I'm just praying that I will be able to sustain this until DS self-weans.

Can I ask you how you helped your DS wean by 12 months? He will be 1yo in December, and I would like to head in that direction, too. ALL YOUR HELP IS SOOOO APPRECIATED!!  :P

TIA!
Jolene

Hi,

I am nowhere near as much of an expert but I was about 16 weeks pregnant when I started weaning Fraser - he was about 1 year old. He too was ready for it - he was getting mobile and had more interesting things to do. The thing that made it easy for me though was that he had been drinking from a sippy cup since 6 months old (for nursery). I would recommend that you don't 'fight' your DS with a cup but make sure he sees one every day... maybe offer a cup of water or milk with meals or in place of/during/after one breastfeed initially, but don't worry if it is ignored.

Congratulations! Oh and remember to take it easy - pregnancy is tiring even without another baby to care for.
