thus far andrew has had

sweet potato
acorn squash
peas
yellow beans (doesn't like)
avocado (doesn't like)
bananas
applesauce
rice cereal
and
oat cereal.

what else can i give him?  i'm at a loss as to what would be good vegetables and fruit to give him.  he's just about six months and likes eating.  he hasn't had any finger foods yet.

any help about what other foods to give him would be much appreciated.

thank you

pear and carrots come to mind
papaya  - if you can get it (we have tropical fruits galore here)
canteloupe - just toss some ripe pieces in a belnder or food processor.  if it is too runny thicken with some rice cereal

Mangos!!!!! YUMMY!!!! :D :D :D

Barley cereal, millet cereal (may have to make your own and process yourself, can find the grain at Whole Foods and other health food stores in bulk), green beans. Super Baby Food (Ruth Yaron) suggests yogurt as a first food for babies 6 months and older, although I'm waiting till closer to 7 (any day now, in other words, for us!); she hasn't had any reactions to dairy in my diet, so I'm not too worried about that.

BTW, if he's not keen on avocado, don't give up on it! It's easy to mix with cereal and fruits like pears and apples, with veggies like squash, and with cereals. It's got lots of AWESOME essential fatty acids and is good for brain development.

You can also gently season some foods and food combinations and see how he does with herbs and spices like cinnamon, cumin (both good on squash, BTW), a little garlic, maybe basil or oregano.

BTW, if he's already had oat cereal, PLAIN Cheerios don't have much in them besides oats, and you can get organic ones at health food stores too. Soak in formula or EBM if they make you nervous or if he's not keen on crunchy stuff and let him use as finger food practice! :)

how could i forget carrots.  duh!

the fruits all sound yummy as well.  is he old enough to have things like mangos and pears.  i read that citrus fruits should be given last?  is that true?

there's so much out there, it's so confusing...

Pears are actually pretty mild; Tracy suggests them as a first food in her first book.

Yes, citrus should wait a while, I think a year but not sure, becaus it's so acidic and some folks are actually allergic to citrus.

BTW, for carrots, there was a thread here a loooong way back about homemade carrot baby food - it's actually better to use commercially prepared, as they have fewer nitrites (it's a by-product of the preparaiton, not a problem with regular vs organic carrots or anything like that). If you DO make your own, make sure that you do NOT re-use the cooking water in your processing of the carrots.

thanks everybody!

the cinammon on the sweet potatoes was a hit!  he loved it.  now i'm just wondering is a spice considered a food.  do i have to wait 3-4 days now before introducing something new?
