No more jared foods!
« on: December 30, 2005, 04:24:18 am »
Maybe I shouldn't be complaining, I mean when I started ds on the jars, I hated the very idea of them.  Was counting the day until he could eat "real people" food.  Well, now my almost 10 month ds has rejected all jared food and wants what we are eating.  The minute he sees me with a spoon in my hand he shouts "No".  All he wants to do is feed himself.  So, that means finger foods.  With only 6 teeth, I'm trying not to worry about how much food he is taking in...the jars at times are so much easier and you KNOW how much they eat.  I always wonder how much makes it into his mouth.

My question is, should I just go with the flow and stop with the jars and really make him (to a point) what we eat?  Or, should I still try to get a spoonfull in here and there?  Is 10 months too young to be on finger food only?  He loves chicken, rice, fruit, green beans, tofu.  I just chop it up real fine and he goes at it.  He doesn't even like it when we put some finger food in his mouth.  I guess he is growing up and I'm not ready.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Jill

Jill-

I remember those days all too well! When Tyler hit 9 mo, he refused anything from a spoon, and from then until his 1st birthday it was finger food only. I just gave up on the spoon for the most part. I'd try it once a week or so, just to test the waters, and if he refused it then I put it away. So no, 10 mo is definitely not too young to be on finger foods only. It's pretty common, and is often one of the first signs that your baby is becoming a toddler! And even if he only has 6 teeth, he'll still get plenty to eat, since babies gum their food...no teeth required! It's a bit harder to estimate how much food he's still taking, so let his appetite be your guide, and keep an eye on his appearance to ensure he doesn't lose weight. And even if it seems like he's barely eating anything, keep in mind that jarred food is mostly water, whereas finger foods are just food. It will take a lot less to fill him up, but he's actually getting the same amount of actual food. Does that make sense?

Welcome to toddler world! :D
