Pat/Shh not working for me! Help!
« on: December 30, 2005, 06:14:59 am »
DD is 8 weeks old and I have been trying a bedtime routine for a couple of weeks now, where I will give her her bath, read her a book, feed her and then bedtime.  I used to have her go into a 'milk coma' and then put her in her crib, and she would wake up a few times before really passing out for the night.  Some nights were better than others.  She is usually fussy for a few hours so it is a game of keeping her from crying - bouncing, swinging, feeding, etc...

For two days now I have been trying EASY and during the day it has been working well, but come the afternoon, she begins to fuss and it goes on into nighttime.  I have stopped the rocking, shushing, etc and have been trying the shhh/pat which works for naps but tonight it took TWO hours of pat/shhhing - picking her up when crying in the crib to shhh/pat, which she cries through, then when she finally is calm, I put her back but as soon as her head hits the mattress she begins to scream again even if I try to shh/pat her in bed!  Finally tonight I gave her the boob and put her down still awake but calm and she finally dozed off on her own.

What am I doing wrong?  Also, DD is on the 3hr EASY and this afternoon, after about 4 on into bedtime, she was hungry every hour so I fed her, but in the morning and early afternoon, she is eating every 3 hrs, and will wake up only once or twice a night.

Hi there...first of all you are doing nothing wrong!!! I have  a 5 month old son who is doing the very same at the moment and have my own posting on about this too!!

I was given a piece of advice to try and it has worked the last 2 nights. I used to give jakob his solids at 5.30.bath at 5.45 and bottle straight after the bath....however it was suggested to feed him solids at 5,bath at 5.30pm and then quiet time until 6.30 before feeding him in his room at 6.30 and then putting him in bed........the bath can stimulate some rather than relax them!!! Obviously that was the case with jakob too!!!

The quiet time he lies on his mat without toys and just chills out for a bit and lets off any left over energy (he may one day be a judo star! with the kicking he does!) There is little stimulation during this time.Simple, quiet voices, singing softly etc

Im not sure if this would work for you ...jakob took 2 hours to go to sleep last night and an hour tonight but needed no intervention or help from me and didnt scream or cry...a major improvement simply by adding the quiet time after a bath and waiting until he has nearly reached tired stage.,before feeding that last bottle.it means he has gone down more relaxed obviously and is quite content to lay in his cot and talk himself to sleep.......

Well hope it gets better for you too....pm me if you want a someone to chat to via email...always happy to have new people to share stories with and support

take care

kristy's already given you great advice, but just wanted to add - from about 4pm on it is normal to 'cluster feed' - feed them every 2 hrs instead of every 3.  so for example you would feed say at 4pm, 6pm, 8pm...  or until bedtime.

also, they do hit a growth spurt at 9 weeks... you may be hitting that early too???

I am on Day 6 of pat/shhh my 9.5 week old and I have already seen how worth it it is.  It sounds like you are having the same concerns I had when I started doing this.  I don't think you are doing anything wrong, its just a difficult process in the beginning.  One night it was so bad for me I think I shh-ed myself to tears!!  But stick with it, you will soon see the results and it will definitely pay off.  One day it will just fall into place as it did for me.  Like anything in life, I am sure there are setbacks so don't be discouraged if you have a bad day after you have seen progress.  At least that is what I try to tell myself as well.  I can definitely relate to you so I hope this helps you.  It helped me to know I wasn't alone.

Now I am struggling with short naps of 45 mins. and trying to help her sleep longer at night.  Sounds like a lot of moms are having these same issues so we're not alone.  I guess its always a work in progress.
