Awake time for 5month old!
« on: January 13, 2006, 01:51:27 am »
Can you tell me what the suggested awake time for a 5month old should be, between nap and nap.  I read that they should only nap 3-4 hours a day.  Is this correct?  How long should he be awake before bedtime so that it doesn's interfere?

Thanks

Hi

I don't have them for a 5mo old, but here they are for 6-8...this should tell you where you heading.

6-8 month old
2.5 after am wake up – usually 1.5-2.0hr in length
2-3hr after end of am nap – same as above

So
7am wake
9.30 am nap – wake no later then 11am
1.00 or 2.00 pm nap – wake no later then 4pm
3.30 or 4.00 catnap (if needed) – 30/45min
7.00 – 7.30 bed

Does that help?

Hi there
my LO is 19 weeks old so close to 5 months, he can usually handle 1 and a half hours of awake time before he needs a nap. He normally naps for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon with sometimes a catnap at around 4.4.30, though invariably he is up by 5pm which doesn't interfere with his 6.30-7pm bedtime

I also recall that my LO at 5mos could handle between 2.0-2.25hr of A time, just shows they are all different.

Hope that helps!

Hi margarita

I think it goes to show how different our babies all are.  My dd went from needing to be put down for a nap after 1.5 hours a short time ago (around 4 months) and now she can hold her own for well over 2 hours - pushing it to 3 some days - she'll be 5 months in 4 days.

Yesterday for example she had a really good lunchtime nap of 2.5 hours and woke at 3pm.  we were geared up to put her back down at 5-5.30 for a little nap of 30 minutes but her tired signs never came.  We tried her anyway at 5.30pm thinking she must be tired and she ust lay in her cot happily for 20 minutes or so wide awake but enoying a bit of quite time in a dark room (so did we  :P ) When we put her to bed at 7pm she settled really well - not overtired ust ready for her bed.  So that was an awake time of 4 hours at nearly 5 months!  She was offered a nap but didn't need it which goes to show how quickly they change and how different one baby is to another.

Thanks for all the help!  I was getting worried because i thought he should be awake for longer periods of time!  He is normal though! :)
