culprits of gas?
« on: January 22, 2006, 17:45:19 pm »
What are the "typical" culprits of gas?  Ds has had some pretty bad gas that kept him awake the past 2 or 3 evenings and if it continues, I'll need to figure out if I'm eating something that's upsetting his tummy...  I don't have much dairy as I'm lactose intolerant.  I don't think it's my dinner as the other night it started before that time of night.  Suggestions to look into?

I had the same problem with my son - 4 mo. old now.  I cut dairy completely out of my diet and it helped, but he was still fussy and had a hard time sleeping partially because of gas.  I use gas drops with him any time I think it's gas.  I have been told by many health professionals that these are safe (I use little tummies) because they don't absorb into the body.  I had suspicions that he was sensitive to other things in my diet (maybe eggs, caffiene, nuts, other things)  so I decided to make the switch to formula at 3 months.  He started on Nutramigen (expensive) so we tried Gentlease ( he reacted to the milk with a rash and gas) and now have settled on Prosobee soy formula.  He now has almost no gas discomfort and I haven't used gas drops more than a couple of times in the last couple of weeks.  this may also be due to digestive maturity, though.  Hope this helps.

This seems to be a pretty standard post for a 2 week old baby, sometimes I think the best we can do is burp them really well, and wait for them to grow out of it. Max's gas was the worst around 3 weeks (those mylicon drops do work well) and got a lot better by 6 weeks when he could start passing it on his own.

yes, I think diet can affect it. It depends on to what extreme his crying/pain is.

Also, check the latch and make sure he's not just swallowing too much air - sometimes if your let down is really fast, the gulp more and swallow more air.

My lo was the gas queen at that age. My doctor had me cut out anything with citrus, caffine, eggs and milk products. Babies also get gas from swallowing air when they cry and when they suck on a paci. I also used the drops and found they helped. My low is now 10 weeks and burps much better so I think in time they learn how to burb.
