How do your babies sleep?
« on: January 25, 2006, 16:15:06 pm »
Hi everyone :D
I was just wondering how do your babies sleep, on their side, or on the tummy, swaddled or not?

Paul sleeps swaddled tigthly (trying to loose one arm of the swaddle...but not there yet :?) on his side (switch sides every nap)

10-month-old gets put in the cot in a Grobag on his back, but rolls stright onto his tummy. if we check on him before we go to bed, he's usually wedged up against the bars of the cot, in what looks like a very uncomfortable position. he often has his face down in the mattress. Just as well we bought a fully breathable mattress!

Samuel is 5 mths & sleeps on his back as that is what is recommended.  He has never been swaddled.

forgot to say that - swaddling isnt recommended, as baby gets too warm, and its breathing is restricted. (That's the advice from UK midwives. I know Tracy gave different advice. I guess we just do what suits our lo!)

once they learn to roll over etc, they'll sleep in whichever position they are comfortable!

Jack sleeps in a gro-bag on his tummy. The gro-bag is a recent thing but has slept on tummy from a few weeks old-he just sleeps better that way and was sleeping in his cot right next to our bed until he could roll-which is when he moved rooms. Now he pretty much sleeps on his tummy, but sometimes his side.Even though he can roll both ways he is not comfortable sleeping on his back now.

Put in crib on her left side, or she rolls that way herself.  Later puts herself on her back.  Head elevated for reflux.  Jammies are a blanket sleeper material shaped like a sleep sack with arms.
When you're soaring through the air, I'll be your solid ground.  Take every chance you dare.  I'll still be there when you come back down.

We just moved our dd into her room about a week ago.  Never slept on her tummy until 2 nights ago.  I am uncomfortable with this, but once they can roll over it is almost impossible to keep them on their backs.  She is sleeping through the night, waking up only once/twice and going back to sleep on her own.  We did use the CIO method for only one night and after that she did great.  I had been doing the pu/pd method(which is the ideal thing to do) but it was not working for us after about 3 weeks.  So we changed methods and it worked.

Hello again everyone

vcmdonald28: I don't know if you have read any of Tracy's books, in them she highly recommends swaddling to sleep (full swaddle for up to 3 to 4 months, and half swaddle for up to 7 to 8 months old), but i guess it depends who's advice are you following: For me its working wonders, and i guess you have to do what ever works for you...  ;)

Thanks for answering everyone  :D

Highly recommend swaddling, especially as newborns :)

I have always put my dd on her back...as soon as she was mobile I have found her mostly on her tummy and side...never on her back :D

Hi there,

I beg to differ with the comment above - swaddling is invaluable for those babies who find it troubling to have their arms and legs flailing (in particular whilst the Morrow reflex is still strong). Here in Australia (yes, its the middle of a stinking summer) I have swaddled my lo since birth (with a lightweight voile swaddle) and he definitely sleeps best that way. However, now at nearly 6 months, we have recently weaned him from the swaddle without too much trouble over a period of about 2 weeks. The main reasons for removing the swaddle for me were:

a) he starts childcare in 3 weeks and I wanted him to be able to sleep without the swaddle as I am not sure whether they will be able to consistently wrap him

b) I want him to lessen his dependency on the dummy, and releasing his arms allows him the freedom to either replace his dummy or to suck his thumb

c) he is starting to roll over and I felt that unswaddled sleeping would be best for him in a more mobile state.

Notwithstanding my reasons above, many mothers on this site have reported that they have swaddled their lo's until up to 12 months. In times when my lo is distressed or having trouble sleeping, I expect that I will still use the swaddle from time to time.

My DD is 7 months old, sleeps on her back and swaddled.  When she starts to roll (she is not thinking about at all), I will start weaning her from her swaddle, but I will still keep swaddling her legs, as it is a comfort to her.

Palmer sleeps swaddled with white noise in his car seat.. which is in his crib.  I am trying everything to get him out of the car seat, but it isn't going well.  He sleeps amazingly well at night in his car seat.  He isn't good with naps.. basically he will only sleep for 30 minutes until the afternoon, then he is so exhausted that he sleep for 3 hours or so .  This isn't so bad as this long nap usually is at the same time as his brother's.  But man is he super crabby throughout the morning due to sleep deprivation!  Pat/shh isn't really helping.. I didn't have much success with it with Duncan (big brother) either.

I am scared to death that Palmer is going to be a swaddling, white noise, pacifier and car seat addicted kid.  UGH.

My Lo is 3 months. She sleeps swaddled and on her side. Sometimes she flips to her back.
