forgot to say that - swaddling isnt recommended, as baby gets too warm, and its breathing is restricted.
Hi there,
I beg to differ with the comment above - swaddling is invaluable for those babies who find it troubling to have their arms and legs flailing (in particular whilst the Morrow reflex is still strong). Here in Australia (yes, its the middle of a stinking summer) I have swaddled my lo since birth (with a lightweight voile swaddle) and he definitely sleeps best that way. However, now at nearly 6 months, we have recently weaned him from the swaddle without too much trouble over a period of about 2 weeks. The main reasons for removing the swaddle for me were:
a) he starts childcare in 3 weeks and I wanted him to be able to sleep without the swaddle as I am not sure whether they will be able to consistently wrap him
b) I want him to lessen his dependency on the dummy, and releasing his arms allows him the freedom to either replace his dummy or to suck his thumb
c) he is starting to roll over and I felt that unswaddled sleeping would be best for him in a more mobile state.
Notwithstanding my reasons above, many mothers on this site have reported that they have swaddled their lo's until up to 12 months. In times when my lo is distressed or having trouble sleeping, I expect that I will still use the swaddle from time to time.
