Ultra dumb question here...
« on: March 21, 2006, 21:25:44 pm »
...I should already know this but here goes...

We make large batches of formula in our household (twins!) so I never have to make individual bottles up.  So the other day when I needed to do so for whatever reason, I was a bit taken aback because I wanted an 8 oz bottle.  So I filled the bottle with 8oz water and added 4 scoops as per can instructions (one scoop per 2 oz) but then of course the powder added volume and therefore we ended up with a 9 oz bottle when measuring total volume.  So...all this time when I've been pouring formula into bottles up to the 8 oz mark...I've been calling that an 8 oz bottle but really is it only 8 oz when it's 9oz??  Hope that's not too confusing...

Thanks!!

Sarah

Hi

I do 1 scoop to 1oz but the principles the same if I make an 8oz bottle; I add 8oz of water then 8 scoops, then the volume rises to about 8/9oz.  But I treat it as 8oz.

This really confused me whn eI started bottle feeding, I had to check with my HV.

not an ultra dumb question... i always think about that... but in the terms of do you calculate the number of oz./day by the water or the outcome formula???? motherhood is confusing isn't it?????

i don't know whether it's right or not but i've been keeping track of things by the total volume ie what's in the bottle after the formula is added. it's not often that our lo finishes a whole bottle anyway (better too much than too little), so i look at the full volume at the start and then subtract what's left over for his total consumption.

You should keep track of it by: total scoops, not by resulting volume after the formula has been added. In my case as I said in the initial reply.

if I make an 8oz bottle; I add 8oz of water then 8 scoops, then the volume rises to about 8/9oz.  But I treat it as 8oz.

Hope this clears things up.

it might be different in different countries then, cos the manufacturer of the formula i use here states on the can that 50ml water plus 1 scoop of powder makes 55.4ml formula (sorry, don't know what this is in oz). i even rang them to check in case i'd got it confused and they said that they treat the full volume as what's in the bottle after the powder is added, as i'd been doing. so 200ml (?8oz) of water plus 4 scoops makes 230ml (?9oz) formula.

sorry to be persistent but i started to get a bit confused myself.... :)

I think it's different for different doctors and health visitors not just countries; we have one HV who goes by the number of scoops and one who goes by the made up volume.  I just keep an eye on the fact that DD is getting in the right range and try not to worry  ::)

You can make it by the quart also.  To make one quart, use 29 oz water with 1 packed cup and 2 TBSP formula.  I usually double this and pour the bottles.  I use a Braun hand mixer, so if I want an 8 oz bottle I usually pour up to the 9 oz mark since the foam takes up an oz.  Have I confused you more????

I would just keep doing what you're doing.  Sounds fine to me.  And just so ya know, when I make individual bottles, I go by the water amt and then add the formula and if he leaves an ounce or two, I don't panic  ;D
