3.5 month old - should i go back to swaddling?
« on: March 19, 2006, 15:18:22 pm »
About 2 weeks before we started BW to handle our night issues, DD (Jorja) was swaddled and slept in her bassinet in my bedroom.  Becuase she began to roll over and push up, and the age limit on the bassinet is up to 3 months, we decided to move her to her crib at night (she had already been napping there) and becuase she was getting so strong, she was able to get out of her swaddler and I stopped using that. I should elaborate by saying that she could free both arms from the swaddle, and kick her legs out, but it stayed tight around the middle.

She was going down well for both bedtime and naps - no crying, just a little fussing, and sleeping for 1.5 hours at naptime (bedtime was a whole other story).  My question is, should I go back to swaddling her?  Or stay consistent with just putting her on her back.  We've only been doing this two nights (on our third day) so I'm just confused if that would throw everything off now, even though I seem to have thrown alot at her all at once.

Any thoughts?

i'm a little confused by what was happening then vs. now...  before, you were swaddling, but she was freeing arms & legs, and turning over?

or is it that she's turning over now that you've removed the swaddle and you're trying to put her back on her back???

either way... once babies can roll on their own it is safer for them to sleep on their tummies.  if you are not comfortable with that and would like her to continue to stay on her back while sleeping, i'd go back to swaddling her.  if she was okay with freeing her arms & legs but having her middle wrapped, i'd leave it.  i remember jaina doing something similiar for a couple months before she was totally ready to be rid of it.

anyhow, there's some waffling for you!   :D

Oops!  Sorry.

She is now rolling consistently from front to back - occaisionally from back to front.  She doesn't roll over in her sleep - much, and she doesn't seem interested in sleeping on her tummy.  She's just used to her back, I guess.  At one time she was happy on her side, but now she cries when I lay her down like that, too.

Anyway, two weeks ago she was swaddled on her back but not rolling in her sleep - just during her activity time.  The reason we are moving her from her basinett to her crib is that the instructions on her basinett say that once they can roll over and push up on their hands, not to use it anymore.  I also would like to see her sleeping in her own room and sleeping through the night - which I dont' think she is going to do as well in mommy and daddy's room.

So back to the original issue - At her last two naps, we swaddled her again and she did well, so I think until we tackle some other problems, we will keep that up.  One step at a time, right?

Thanks for your advice, and once we drop the swaddle, I'm going to see if she'll sleep on her tummy!  ;D
