Bottle introduction at 10 months...some advice needed!
« on: March 26, 2006, 22:31:43 pm »
Hi,
I posted this on the breastfeeding and pregnancy thread but thought I might get a little more info on the regular forum. Here is a little history:

I am currently pregnant and nursing my 10 month old daughter, who until a few days ago never took a bottle. We had to go cold-turkey on breastfeeding because my supply had decreased so significantly that her weight dropped nearly 1 pound in a very short period of time.

I'd like to reintroduce one breastfeeding session a day since it seems I have enough supply to at least provide her with one full feed/daily, but I'm afraid that she may go back to refusing the bottle once she has the breast again. It has been 4 full days without nursing (I've been pumping in the meantime). Does anyone else have experience with going cold-turkey on breastfeeding to get a baby to take a bottle and then return to a few nursing sessions a day? Is this a good idea or am I heading for problems?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!

I can only recommend NUK teats (Air system, they are the closest ones to the nipple-shape) and a nice wee morning or night routine that includes the breastfeed...

I don't have any experience with this, but I think if it were me, that I would try to nurse once a day.  I say this only because she can obviously adapt each way now.

I wouldn't think that she would refuse the bottle now and if she did for a feed, I couldnt' imagine it lasting four days like last time.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for the input ladies!

I had to laugh though. Apparently my post read differently than I intended. I should say that she HAS BEEN eating daily...I just haven't been nursing her (she has been taking the bottle instead). It sounded like she went on a 4 day without food binge. YIKES :)

I'll try to reintroduce one breastfeeding session a day and hopefully we won't have a baby who refuses the bottle for the other feedings.

Thanks again!
