2 naps into 1
« on: March 25, 2006, 18:39:31 pm »
Hi, Jacob is jsut over 16 months. I am trying to transition 2 naps into one. He sleeps 12 hours. Up at 6.30am, bed 6.30pm. His first nap is for 30-45mins. His second is for 1.5-2 hours (usu.1.5) begining at 1.45pm. He is touchy textbook, but usually angel if we stick to routine.
I have been gradually moving his am nap and now we are at 11.30am, it has just begun to affect the afternoon nap, ie is pushing it forward a bit.

There are 2 things:
1. Should I really be starting his one and only nap from 11.30 and trying to get him to go down for longer, so that they are in effect amalgamated, or should I try to keep him up until after lunch for one big pm nap?

2. Would it be too much to expect him to eventually stay up until 1.30pm for his pm nap?

The only trouble is that Jacob goes to nursery on 4 days, 3 of those I collect him at 12.50pm, so don't get back home until just after 1pm, then it's milk and snacks.

I would welcome your advice! Thanks IA.

I am in the same boat, except that my lo's second nap is also 30 minutes long. She was a great napper, took two 1.15 hr naps, until about three weeks ago. We're also upto 11:30, and the second nap is around 3-3:30. Everyone in the toddler forum advised me to stick with it since one nap can take upto a month to transition, and only then will it get longer. Until then I have to bear with the crankiness and try to go with the flow.

Maybe this wasn't much help, but I'll also be watching closely incase someone comes with a suggestion I can follow too.

Ultimately, you'll want to have him down for a long PM nap (after 12 pm) if possible. Ideally, it should start around 1 pm. However, I haven't seen a baby yet that is 100% textbook.

You're going the right direction, slowly push the am nap to the pm until it becomes the only nap. He can start his long nap as early as 11:30/12 pm, but he might be a little cranky come bedtime for awhile. Until you make the transition, you may go back and forth between the old schedule and the new, unless you just want to take the dive and stick to one.

Sumita--Can you do the same with your nap schedule? As in just push the first nap to the pm and stick with that nap, eliminating the one at 3-3:30? I guess it partially depends on what time is bedtime as well. You may need to move bedtime back a half hour-1 hour to work with the new schedule. But it might make your day a little easier!

Thanks Sonya, I was just reading the sticky about 2 naps into 1.
Yesterday - the first day of just having one nap went brilliantly. Jacob  had lunch at 11.30,  and went down at 11.45 -for 2 1/4 hours!
Today he woke after 1 hour 10. Did pu/pd for 40mins. Haven't had to do that for ages. It was horrid.  Then he was very tired for the rest of the afternoon. It did make me question, who I am doing this for, and where has my angel baby gone ??? Tomorrow, i am going to have to stretch his awake time again,  cos it's a nursery day, but will try to get off work earlier. I know it's not going to just happen overnight, so I will have to do my best.

Sumita, have you read that link? https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=41952.0
