When to upgrade the number of the bottle's nipple?

I'm wondering when I should go to the next number because lately my ds wants to to drinks his bottles  in "phases". He drinks about 2-3 oz then pushes the bottle away and then 15 mins later he's looking for it and tugging at my leg to give him more. And he takes the bottle with lots of interest until 2-3 oz later    I thought maybe it was too much formula but he ends up drinking it all and the day I made him less formula his naps wher out of whack and he was cranky.  He using the #3 nipples with Avents bottles, do you think he's ready for #4?

My advise is, all you can really do is try #4 teats and see how he gets on. If he is gagging, choking and milk flows out, the #4 is too fast.

Thanks, I thought maybe there was a specific way of knowing, we;ve been bottle feeding for only a few weeks now and I'm still a rookie with some stuff.

That would make it too easy for us

If it helps, I read somewhere that it should take babies around 15mins to finish a bottle.

From my own experience I found 3-5 sucks before swallowing seemed to work for DS best.  If less than 3 then he's really gulping it down and would get quite windy.  If more than 5 he would get tired and loses interest.

DS takes anywhere from 10mins to 50mins to finish a 10oz bottle

He used to down it all in about 10 mins until recently that he's been wanting to play right in the middle of the bottle. I put him down on the floor for about 15 mins then offer him more, which he'll drink for a bit, but then that playing bug starts to itch him again!

I'm going out today to get #4 teats to see how he handles them tonight.
