4 mth old with 5am wakeup
« on: April 30, 2006, 20:38:47 pm »
I see many posts about 7-8 mth olds with early wake-ups but the discussions seem different since my DD is 4 mths old. I am hoping someone can help me.
My DD is currently waking up at 5:15 am-- It's ungodly to get up anytime before 6am IMO!
She's 4 months old and here is her schedule:

E: 5:15am
Change diaper while she chatters away then back to sleep again within 45 minutes
S: 6/6:15am-8:15am - is this  a nap or part of her nighttime sleep?
E: 8:15am
A: 8:30am
S: 10/10:15am

E: 11:30/12 (depends on length of nap)
A: 12:15
S: 2:00pm

E: 3:30/4pm (sometimes earlier if wakes earlier from nap)
A: 4:15
S: catnap at around 5 if her last nap was short

E: 5:30
A: Bathtub ready for bed at around 6:30
E: short snack right before bed
S: 7:00/7:30 pm
DF at around 11pm

She used to wake at around 3:30 for no reason but that has recently stopped (hopefully for good).
I'm not sure whether to treat the 5:15 wake-up as her morning or as a break from night-time sleep b/c she's hungry.
Any suggestions on how to eliI minate the 5:15 wakeup?

hello!

i'm afraid that early wakeup is all too common at 4 months.  it's mostly developmentally related, and it can definitely be extended.  that first "nap" at 6am should be part of her night sleep.

have you ever left her to chat to herself (not crying)?  sometimes they do just drift back off to sleep on their own.  otherwise, you could do pat/shh (or pu/pd if that doesn't work).  before you do that, though, i'd try & do wake to sleep, and see if you can just eliminate it altogether.

my 2 cents anyhow!   :D
