40 mins naps - tiredness or not enough A time?
« on: April 20, 2006, 18:50:08 pm »
Sorry to bust in on your conversation... but when you say that short naps are due to not long enough A times... is that the case even when they show tired cues? For example Mateo will have about 1 hour of A time.. he's almost 5 months old... and then he'll start to arch and rub his eyes. So of course I figure it's time to wind down. But then he'l always up at the 40 minute mark. Could it be that he's really not tired enough... or is this a can't get past the first cycle issue?  He sleeps for 1.5 hours in the AM nap, but it's the PM nap that he's always up early from. I never thought that it could mean that he's not really tired enough? Help?

Hiya
They can also be down to overtireness, have you tried going back into his room before the 30 mins and laying a hand on him to help progress him through the next sleep cycle or wake to sleep?

Is he always showing sleepy signs before his 2nd nap or are you used to following the clock?

Lauren

P.S I am going to split this thread and give you a new one  ;)

Hi Lauren!

Thanks for the quick reply.. and the new thread!

Well, today was the first time we tried w2s. He fell asleep at about 1:55 so at about 2:30 I went in and gently shook his arms/legs, he stirred, I ducked... and now here we are it's 3:10 and he's still asleep!

The thing with Mateo is that he normally won't nap for more than 1.5 hours. So our EASY is more like AEASY, so his TOTAL A time may be 1.5 hours, but it's split in two. We're going to continue w2s for the next couple of days and see how it goes.
If things don't improve with the PM nap then maybe I'll try keeping him up past his sleepy cues...
(at first I was doing things by the clock, when we first started EASY, now I try to go by his cues, which tend to hover around the same time daily)

Stacy, can I ask you a question?

How long do you think my son should be awake for at 11weeks old including bf. I am aiming for 1hr 1/2 or so. Unfortunately the 40min naps are really ruining the routine. If I can not get him back to sleep after the 40min mark---he ends up being awake sometimes 1hour plus before bf time, and then change him, quiet wind down and back to bed---sometimes awake for 2 hours and then asleep for 40min again. It is such a vicous cycle.

lets say he awakes and eats at 6:30, asleep by 7:45--sleeps until 8:30.  Now if I can't get him back to sleep------should I keep the next eat at 9:30 and shorten the A time afterwards. This is what I have been doing but I feel that he always overtired by the time he finishes eating--so no wonder he is difficult to settle and can't stay sleeping!

How much do you think noise plays a factor in the transition from 1 stage of sleep to the next stage?
They are building a house right next door to his room.
