Comparing Breast Pumps
« on: April 23, 2006, 02:29:25 am »
Does anyone have any info. or has anyone done any comparisons between breast pumps. I have rented a medela lactina select in the past and am trying to get around renting again but I know I can't afford to buy a medela pump either. I have been looking at an Avent and the new Elan by Evenflo but am not sure how they work compared to the Medela even though they say they have dual controls and such.  Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :D
Thank You!

Hi,
I've tried three. The Avent manual one, an electric one (run on batteries) from NUK and another electric (runs on mains) which I rented from my local farmacy. To my surprise I found the Avent the best one (sorry Stacy!)... The one from NUK is too slow and doesn't get too much milk out of me. The farmacy one was alright, but unfortunately I couldn't keep it forever and I don't know the brand!
My point is, the Avent is the one I'd recommend you if you don't want to spend too much. Otherwise, I'd tell you to invest in something more sophisticated if you want to spend a bit more or do two sides at the same time.

I had a Gerber hand pump and did not like it at all.  If you have large breasts, it maybe would work better for you.

You can always look into renting electirc pumps.

I have Medela symphony and am still using it. it's okay for ocassional use but if you are planning to use it a few times everyday, it can't last. mine lasted me 6 months before i need to buy replacement parts. don't buy manual pump if you are planning to pump few times a day everyday for 10 to 12 months. you won't be able to pump as much and it's tiring. i regretted buying manual pump.

I adore my Medela PIS- but I pump at least twice a day at work and occassionally at night. So I need a good double electric pump.

Hi, I started using a manual pump by The First Years, hated it because it always lost suction.  I then had an electric from evenflo.  It worked for a couple of weeks, and then the motor died.  I was beginning to think I needed my baba's milk machine!  I then purchased a Medela mimi electric, and I love it.  I bought it off of ebay, but it was brand new, sealed in the box, with warranty.  I only wish I would have purchased the double.  I hope I don't burn mine out using it so often.

Hi, I bought the mini electric from medela, I like it but the motor is a bit loud so I ended up using the manual part. It was affective and great at the beginning to pump the occasional bottle. I also bought the avent isis, which was Ok, easy, one hand use. I am now renting a lactina by medela. This is the best so fare. With a bit of practice I was able to pump hands free ;D It all comes down to what you need it for and how long you'll use it for. If I would of known better I would of bought a better double electric pump at the beginning, I think it would of been cheaper in the long run.

My baby was in hospital for 7 weeks after she was born so I  am expert at pumping!! I  found the avent hand pump to be the most efficient because I liked the ability to control the pumping frequency and strength according to the flow of milk. You can double pump with them - put slits in an old bra to hold the pumps in place (like the expressions holterneck bra). I also used a medela mini electric and hated it. Two other friends didn't like it either. It was noisy and not very comfortable although I did use it still because it was handy to have a third pump around (I was pumping 10 times a day at one point). Don't bother trying to use it with batteries though it eats them - doesn't last long enough for a single 20 min pump. In the hospital I used the big blue ameda pumps which you can hire out. These were very easy to use and very efficient especially for double pumpimg. The suck frequency and strength can be adjusted throughout the expressing period too.  Again if you use a bra to hold the pumps in place you have your hands free to do something else too. I  think if I had to do this again for a second baby in NICU I would probably hire the ameda pump from the beginning. heres a link for reviews of pumps at mumsnet too http://www.mumsnet.com/rev/bp/
