crying and guilt
« on: May 17, 2006, 21:36:39 pm »
I've noticed (the past few naps) that my LO (almost 3 weeks old) does much better if I let him fuss it out for 4-6 minutes rather than trying to help him fall asleep.  If I help him, it looks like this-- pacifier for 3-4 min...falls out...cries...put pacifier back in...sucks for 3-4 min...falls out...cries...this cycle continues for about 30 min. until he finally falls asleep and spits paci out.

The problem is that I feel so guilty when I let him fuss/cry.  Does anyone else do this?  I know that 5 min. isn't going to kill him, but it might kill me.   :-\   It seems like he gets a lot more sleep though.

is he crying or fussing?  Fussing is ok, as he is settling himself and you are off to a great start with an independent sleeper.

Hi

I had the same with mine - she is 12 weeks now and still fusses every time she goes down for the night.  I leave her if she is just fussing which is normally about 5 mins, but as soon as she starts to cry I then go to her.  Nine times out of ten she goes off to sleep with no intervention from me.

I felt guilty to start with and when ever she made a noise I would be straight in there, but after a while you realise it is much better for the baby to try and go to sleep on their own.  My LO used to also fuss when going for her AM nap, but now she just goes to sleep with no fussing (cant say the same for the PM naps though!!)

I would say just try not to feel guilty you are doing great.
