8 month old now refusing to eat solids
« on: May 09, 2006, 16:01:08 pm »
Hi, my LO is now 8 months old.  I started him on solids at 5 months, and he took to it well.  At around 7 months he got a cold and started teething cause one tooth has pushed its way through, and since then, feeding him his solids has turned into a nightmare.  I start off by putting him in his highchair and he knows the food is coming cause he opens his mouth for hte spoon initially.  I can maybe (if im lucky) get about 3 spoons in, and then he starts swatting my hand away and getting very irritated.  We have taken to playing with tupperwares, to try and distract him a bit, but eventually he gets VERY upset and only calms down when i take him out the chair and put him on his playmat with his toys.  i have got a few different things for him to try, but i cant believe that it is a taste issue, cause things he used to eat, he is now refusing to eat, and sometimes will eat!!!!
Any ideas on what the problem is and how i can deal with it?  Sometimes he eats OK if he is perhaps on my lap & has calmed down, or if he is in his car seat if we are travelling somewhere, but there is no guarentee on any position!!!
Tx,
Robs

Have you tried finger foods? Around that age, lots of babies start exerting their independence and prefer to self-feed with finger foods.

Oh boy do I know what you are going thru!!!!
Phoebe is nearly a year, she started this about 6 weeks ago. She used to eat 3/4 off meal of spoon and rest by finger food. She is great with FF and has always accepted new foods with delight.

Feeding time is a battle ........was a battle, changed my tatics today.

Finger food would br good for your LO as it gives him some independence, alsoletting him have his own spoon as well (sorry if you do this already). Help him to bring spoon towards his mouth, hopfully you'll get a bit more in!!!!.

Phoebe has been having chicken, sweet pot and carrot nuggets for months, also strips chicken marinated in milk for an hour pounded flat and coated in breadcrumbs (milk softens chicken) is a good FF.
I would cut out all snack in between meals or no snacks 2 before meal as LO will take snacks and refuse meal :)
Phoebe cut down to 2 formula feeds at about 9mths as the afternoon one was taking away appetite for her tea/dinner/supper. If I felt she wasn't getting enough milk I would give something with calcium at dinner, making up defiecit that way.

I feed her outside today on patio, change of surrondings (live in Glasgow, scotland) weather very good for a change. It worked she ate a lot more, she threw sauce everywhere and I didn't care as it was outside. I was more relaxed therfore so was she. The dogs loved it.

Fraid it gonna be around a while, try not to panic/stress, if not eating within 30mins remove food and don't offer other choices or sweet/yoghurt if meal not eaten they are very clever. Mum will still give me that yummy sweet stuff!!!!

Good luck, thinking off you tomorrow morning when my battle starts

My DD is off her food at the moment and she usually LOVES her food and it is due to teething.
Could your DS be teething?

Totally agree with Natasha - likely teething and/or a cold. My DD went through nearly a week of this - down to only 16 or so ounces formula and barely any solids. But she is just now getting over a cold and cutting a tooth and starting to eat again! Try to ride it out - we just had DD drink enough to stay hydrated and found she would take some cold fruit puree.

Thanks so much for all the feedback - glad to hear that I am not alone!!!
Debs, tried to give my LO the spoon at supper time today, and hes a bit too little to feed himself, but he enjoyed holding a spoon while i fed him - was a bit more successful!!!
I think he is teething, but want to try giving him FF - does anyone have suggestions on what to start him on?  Just dont want to give him something that he could choke on!!!
Thanks so much!

Big fan of starting with Gerber Puffs. They dissolve in the mouth so no choking hazard - my DD loves the sweet potato ones - she picks them up, puts them in mouth and gums them until the dissolve - she goes nuts!

Hi

Teething can effect appetite and a lot more.
Finger food is good for teething baby as they can chew down on it and it helps to encourage teeth to break thru.
At your LO age I used chilled carrot and apple sticks, she was good with FF& chewing so was comfortable with giving it to her. trying to remember, you would think it was years ago she was mths old!!!!
What I do now is peel apple and make it a square/cube shape and let her suck on it. She lvoes the fact she is holding the apple.
I always keep and eye on her so know she is OK.

Let him have spoon at meal times, it will encourage him to eat.
I will keep thinking

Gerber puffs are little star shaped crackers that Gerber makes. If you can't get them in South Africa, a good substitute is Cheerios. Do you have those, or any other kind of cereal or baby snack that dissolves quickly? That's the key for finding a good finger food to start with...something that isn't too slippery, is small enough that it won't block your baby's windpipe, and dissolves quickly.

Debs -

I would be soooooo appreciative if you would post your recipes or personal message them to me as I need vast amounts of help in the what to make baby to eat dept...thanks :) My ds is big into finger foods right now so I would be interested in how to make him happy! Also, when you say you soak them in milk then bake...is  that formula or regular milk?

Thanks!

I use cows milk.
When I make a batch for her (freeze heaps) we have them for dinner as well, I add few spices to coating.

Will get recipes out.

Mine was doing this with meat/veggie combos.  Turns out these days she wants her food cold from the fridge.  Fruit makes sense, but cold baby spaghetti?   :P  Loved it!   It probably feels better on her gums, but it's kinda weird...
