Cereal in the evening?
« on: May 12, 2006, 00:39:42 am »
Just started our 20 week old on cereal.  Won't go into details but after a doctor's visit and a multitude of obvious signs, most importantly, crazy and frequent hunger, we decided to do it.
DH thinks it should be given in the evening to help him have a fuller tummy to sleep and I've caved and given it to him the past 2 nights at 5:30pm, then he's taken a full bf at 6:45.  I don't know if I feel very comfortable doing this even though our doctor also said anytime of day is fine whereas many posts here say do it in the morning first.
I know it's best to start in the morning to see how it digests/be sure of allergies but after you determine it is sitting well with your lo, what are the arguments to keep the cereal in the morning?
Any reasons are welcome - I need "ammunition" to convince DH!  He is feeling like so many of the decisions we are making are ultimately mine and I want him to feel comfortable with whatever we decide without jeapordizing our lo's comfort.
I'm also concerned about this because of the 4-5 days that often go by before a poop just on bm.  However, he slept more comfortably than usual with the cereal in his tummy than without, despite the fact that we were on day 3 of no poop yesterday.

My advice is to do the meal 1hr after morning feed or 1hr after mid morning feed as often giving it at night can often leave them having a heavy stomach. Also when you start introducing different and new foods you will be able to monitor whether their are any reactions during the day.

Thanks, Natasha, that is pretty much what I figured.  I mentioned these points to DH last night before I even saw your post and he suddenly just said, nice and calmly, sure thing!  Whatever!  Anyways, this morning, he had his first bf at 7:15 and his cereal at 8:15.  The first 2 days I gave him a full beginning serving which is 4 tbsp of cereal mix and 1.5 oz of liquid (I'm using ebm for now) and he ate almost all of it.  In retrospect I thought maybe he doesn't know when he's full because it's something new and maybe there was too much food sitting in his tummy, especially when he was taking a full bf before bed only a little over an hour later.  He slept very fitfully last night, started stirring about 1.5 hours in and continued for several hours after that.  Then woke at 1:15, 4:15 and 5:45 before getting up at 7am.  He always wakes at night but this was a little more than usual, much earlier than usually and he just generally made a lot more noise in his sleep than he usually does.  He also hasn't pooped for almost 5 days (the pattern for the past 4 weeks) and we find by this point he is getting quite uncomfortable!  So this morning, I only mixed 1 tbsp of cereal with 1 tbsp of ebm and he downed that pretty quick.  I think I may double that tomorrow morning but then slowly build to the full 4 tbsp.  When do you start giving cereal 2 times a day?
