6 month old sleep issue
« on: May 16, 2006, 16:22:10 pm »
My 6 months and 2 week old Marley is fighting sleep more than she ever has before. Since she was 3 days old we have had a routine before naps and bedtime. For naps we change her diaper, close the blinds, wipe her face with a warm washcloth and sing and rock for about 2 min. While we are singing and rocking she begins crying because she knows she is about to be put in her crib. She has NEVER been rocked to sleep, she didn't need it. She use to go into her crib and fall right to sleep with no fuss. At about 4 months she started fussing for no more than 3 or 4 minutes, before she fell asleep for naps. At bedtime we have always done bath, bottle bed. She is wide awake when we lay her down and most days she goes to sleep without a peep. Lately this has all been disappearing. For naps it sometimes takes 15 to 20 minutes for her to settle down to sleep, and now she is crying. When I do pat shush or PU/PD, it could take an hour or more. If I pick her up at all she stops crying but will not sleep because she thinks it is play time or time to get up. I hate to hear her cry and fuss, but it seems to be the only way for her to fall asleep. I'm regretting that we never rocked her for fear of establishing a "prop." Night time has been tough also, not everynight, but frequently now she cries for a while at night before falling asleep. Never more that 8-12 minutes at night, and sometimes not at all, but I don't understand the changes in her willingness to fall asleep.
Here is her schedule
Wake 6:30 am
Bottle 6oz and 2 tablespoons of cereal
Nap 9:00
Wake 10:30 - 11:00
Bottle 6oz and about 2 tbs of veggies
Nap 1:00
Wake 3:00 or later
Bottle 6oz
Dinner 5:30 Baby food
Bath 7:00
Bottle 9oz 7:15
In crib by 7:30 usually asleep by 7:45 or 8:00.

Also some mornings she wakes up happy and will play alone in her crib for an hour, but some mornings she wakes up crying until we go get her???

Thank You for any advice

Hi,

I think it could be a couple of issues.  First it could be teeth, you could try chamomilla (homeopath remedy) or Tylenol and see if that helps.

I would try limiting her PM nap to NO MORE than 2 hours, even 1.5 hours and try for an earlier bedtime, it sounds like she is overtired/stimulated.  Any new develomental milestones, rolling? sitting? ect...

She has cut 2 teeth in the last month, and she is sitting up alone and rolling around like crazy. I thought I could be the teeth, but the second she sees me walk into the room she smiles and stops crying instantly. We do use tylenol when we see a tooth about to come through. She doesn't cry or seem fussy until it is time to go down for the nap. I do notice at bedtime she cries on days that she has been awake for to long. But even her morning nap is getting more difficult for her to go for?????? Is it a phase for her age??

It could be all the new developments and she is overstimulated, maybe try an extended winddown and see if that helps.
