PLEASE clarify - I feel like I'm gonna go nuts!
« on: May 17, 2006, 23:15:43 pm »
Hi - my 9-month old Spirted baby needs help (as do I!!!!).  She was on a good routine until I left her with in-laws for 9 days so my husband could go on a much-needed vacation.  She has been back in my care for 3-1/2 hellacious days.  Before we left this was her routine:
6:30 wakeup
6:46 milk
7:00 solids
9:30 nap (anywhere between 45min to 2 hours)
11:30 milk
noon solids
2:30 nap (anywhere between 45 min to 2 hours - if am nap was 45 min, then this one was longer)
4:30 milk
5:00 solids
7:30 bedtime

I used PU/pd pretty effectively before our trip - was a few days of hell until she got it, then it worked great for the past 2 months.  BUT, since we returned from our trip, we are into day 3 and she is REALLY fighting sleep and PU/PD.  She has definitely not been getting enough sleep - last night at bedtime she woke up after 45 minutes and screamed for almost an hour until she fell asleep out of exhaustion.  She gets downright hysterical during any PU/PD.  Have even tried just holding down her flailing arms and legs, but she still screams.  Right now she has been screaming for 65 minutes straight!  This morning she woke up at 5:30am and took a short nap in the am.  I put her down for her pm nap at 2:30 and she woke up after 45 minutes, so I've been trying PU/PD for 65 minutes now.

Should I get her up and feed her (since it is her normal feed time), or keep trying some form of PU/PD?  THIS SUCKS!!  Please help - I'm in on this all alone . . . I welcome any suggestions!

Thanks for responding.  I know the grandparents didn't do much pu/pd because they couldn't handle the long crying sessions . . . I have lots of retraining to do!

Anyway, I usually do get her up if it is time for her to eat, even if I did pu/pd for over an hour.  She is clearly exhausted and usually screams LOUDLY most of the pu/pd time.  She hates it: arches her back, pushes with her arms & legs and SCREAMS loudly anytime I do it.  So 2 days ago I started just leaving her in her crib and holding her arms down and talking to her.  This method seems to work a little better and doesn't get her as worked up . . . seems to soothe her, while pu/pd just agitates her.  Then I slowly back out of the room once she is calm but still awake.  This can go on for up to 45 minutes, but she does go back asleep.  It seems to be modified pu/pd, in that I am there for her to soothe her, but am allowing her to fall asleep on her own.  Do you think it's ok?

Also:  should I allow her to take one short 30-45 minute nap, then make the other nap longer (1-1/2 to 2 hours)?  Is this enough sleep for her?  Or should I do my modified pu/pd if naps are under an hour?  She is a difficult baby to read because she can appear wide awake before a nap with no signs of sleepiness and sleep a long time, then when she appears sleepy she can sleep only 30-45 minutes.  So how do I know if she has had enough sleep?

Thanks again for your help - it's much appreciated!
