Hummus spread - too "hot?"
« on: May 22, 2006, 23:54:31 pm »
Hi there!

Just a quick question about Hummus. I heard it's a good spread for kids, so I put some on a piece of bread for DD. DD ate it all up, but after eating she had red spots around her mouth; it looked as if she had burned herself. I used the original kind but I'm thinking it may still be too spicy or too hot for DD. Has anybody noticed a similar reaction to Hummus or does anybody know more about it??
Thanks for the help!

It sounds like an allergic reaction actually.  Does she have any other food allergies?  It may be the tahini paste that is in the hummus that is causing the reaction.  I would probably stay away from the hummus just to be on the safe side.

Definitely sounds like a reaction to me, and I'd also bet that it's the tahini. It could just be a contact thing and not a true allergy...I know there are some foods that Tyler eats that leave red splotches on his face where they've touched his skin, but there are no other signs of a reaction.

Same thing happened here. I think it's the tahini too as I made some after trying the store bought with just chickpeas and a little lemon squoodged together in the blender and no spots!  ;D

Thank you for your responses!
DD has had no allergic reactions to any other foods yet. Also, the red splotches seemed to be the only reaction she had to the hummus and luckily they were gone within an hour or so. She was fine otherwise. I think it spooked mommy more than anything.....
Just curious, Tylersmommy - even though some of the food Tyler eats leaves red splotches on his face, do you still give him the food?

Yes, I still gave those foods to Tyler, but I was extra vigilant about wiping his face. Usually I just wipe his face when he's done eating, but when he's eating something that I know has made him splotchy in the past, I keep a wet paper towel handy and wipe anything off his face as soon as it gets there. The only food that still makes him splotchy is ranch dressing. A certain kind of pasta sauce used to do it too, but he must have outgrown that because it isn't an issue anymore.

Thanks again for the replies!
For now, we'll stay away from the Hummus, I think. Maybe we'll try again when she's a little older and we'll keep lots of wipes handy at that time!
