Stopped sleeping through the night HELP
« on: May 21, 2006, 00:58:53 am »
Hello,

My son is almost 9 months old and has recently stopped sleeping through the night.  For the past 2-3 weeks he wakes up several times through the night screaming and crying.  I have attempted to use the Pu/pd method and stay in his room to assure he is safe and I am there, however me being in the room seems to make it worse.  He will not settle if I stay in the room.  I have tried so many techniques, but nothing has worked. I have began rocking him in the chair again as it seems to be the only way to keep him calm.  I need help as I do not want rocking to be the only way to re-settle him.  My husband and I are getting no sleep and I have no idea what is causing this as he was sleeping through the night from 4months until a few weeks ago.  Please help.   :-[

could he be teething?  Has he done any new developmental things lately? crawling, walking, rolling over, etc...  Those two tend to be big upsets of sleep.  Has his eating pattern changed at all?  Just questions to help diagnose the problem..

Just to share...apparently 9 month old wakings are quite common.  When I mentioned my own situation to our doc (same as you...great sleeper until 9 months and then BAM, wakeups all night) he just looked knowingly at the nurses who were nearby and they all just laughed (well-intentioned) and said 'welcome to 9 months'.  They went on to explain about the beginnings of separation anxiety, night terrors, and as kat1jk mentioned there's always good ole teething and developmental milestones.  For us, it seemed to be a combo of night terrors (1 night) and the rest of the wakings seemed to disappear when DD mastered the forward crawl.  All in all we had about 3 weeks of constant wakings.  I too did the chair rocking for the duration of the wakings and it was quite simple to revert back to independent sleep once the wakings ceased - it seems to me that once they've 'got it' they've got it, and these interruptions are just hiccups.  We just gradually put her down more and more awake, and now at 10 months we are able to have a quick cuddle/song and lay her down and pat her until she's asleep.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll have your DS back shortly!!

Sarah - had you lo been crawling before then?  We are approaching 8 months and have just recently learn to sleep through.  But she's been crawling for over a month.  Was your doc thinking that all this could have been it?  What did the night terror sound like or look like?  sorry just curious

Hi,

Thank you all for your replies.  Kaiden has been crawling since he was 7 months old, and he eats well.  His night wakings are horrible because he doesn't just cry he wakes up screaming. He is up every 2 to 3 hours and the only way to calm him his to take him to our livingroom and rock him.  I havn't been able to get him into the doctors yet, so i do not know if it's medical.   I just hoped that this would pass cause I am getting no sleep and am finding it very hard to get my daily routines completed.

Thanks to all for your advice.

kAT1jk - the night terror was very clearly something we had never seen before...essentially we heard this shrieking, the worst screaming we'd ever heard so we raced upstairs thinking she'd broken a bone or something but she was screaming with her eyes closed and didn't seem to even notice us picking her up, taking her downstairs, singing, rocking, etc...it wasn't that she was upset and therefore difficult to calm...it was clear that she had no idea we were there and was 'somewhere else', somewhere that was terrifying to her.  Eventually it just stopped quickly like a faucet being turned off.  Weird!

you asked about whether she'd been crawling before then and she had been crawling for a while but more like a commando crawl (with arms only) and usually backwards, LOL!  I'm not suggesting that all nightwakings at 9 months are because of crawling, but they are often due to night terrors, sep anxiety, and milestones including crawling, standing, etc..
