7 wk old - nap problems
« on: May 23, 2006, 15:51:55 pm »
My lo will be 8 wks this weekend; is breastfed; and usually sleeps pretty well at night....goes down easily usu. between 8-9 pm and sleeps soundly - have just started trying the dreamfeed around 10:30/11; then usually sleeps til 3 AM; then wakes around 5-6 for another feed, then back to sleep for a few hours.

My problem is that during the day her naps get worse and worse, til by the evening I feel like all I've done is try to get her to sleep. She starts off w/a good morning nap....so good that I started thinking this was the cause of her afternoon/eve. troubles, so I've started shortening it. But the remainder of her naps become a constant struggle. She goes to sleep on her own without trouble, she is usually swaddled, but wakes sometimes after 10-15 minutes. From there we start pat/shh-ing, which works, but then she wakes again 15-20 minutes later! I've tried letting her sort it out - but she ends up getting unswaddled, flailing around, screaming. She settles w/a quick pick-up, but then can't seem to get back to sleep.

She also has been eating every 2 hours or so, when she had been going every 3. I don't know where to start = her naps, her feeding sched., her bedtime, her waketime!?!? I'm so confused.
Here's what her sched. looked like yesterday - it has been wacky for about a week now.....

0900 - I Woke her after sleeping for about 3 h from 6 AM feed
0910 - Eat
1000 - Sleep - slept for about an hour, but had to go in about 3 times to resettle

1115 - Wake
1130 - Eat
1230 - Sleep
1300 - Woke up screaming mad/seemingly hungry after trying to settle for about 15 min.
1315 - Eat
1340 - Sleep attempt again
1415 - no sleep, put her in Bjorn and went for walk - she slept for about 45 minutes, woke after I tried putting her in crib when we returned
1515 - Eat
1620 - Sleep attempt again - lasted for an hour, with sleeping for 5-10 min., waking cyring, trying pat/shh, etc etc, waking/crying
1750 - Eat
1950 - Eat
2100 - Sleep for night
(after all the feedings, we do have awake time - so she's not nursed to sleep)

All evening hours she's mostly awake - looking really bleary eyed, yawning, but alternatingly fussy w/gas/trying to poop. I feel like she's waking w/gas pains, but then gets aroused enough that she thinks she's hungry.....she seems to be constantly rooting/sucking ferociously on her hands/etc. so that we end up nursing every 2 hours or so!
This morning she nursed around 5:30 AM, and then woke about 7:30 AM, which is what I'd rather she do, so that her first morning nap starts around 8:30....how do I keep this constant?

OK - sorry for such a long, rambling post, where after all it seems I have several problems, not just one  ::) Any advice would be most appreciated!!

I am having similiar problems with my 9 week old.  She was taking great naps 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours about a week and a 1/2 ago.  She now is waking up after 30-45 minutes and takes a while to get back to sleep.  Often times she will be awake for 30 minutes and then after she falls a sleep she will wake 15 minutes later and so on.  We are now starting to a difficult time at night waking at midnight, 1:30AM, 2:30-3:00AM feed, 4:30 - 5:00AM wake, 6:00AM feed.  She wakes and then it takes usually 10-15 minutes to get her back to sleep with the pacifier and/or she is out of the swaddle or is ready for a change.  Here is our current routine:

E - 6:00 AM
A - 6:30 AM - Read a book, play gym with mum
S - 7:00 AM - sometimes this nap is fine

E - 9:00 AM
A - 9:30 AM - take a walk
S - 10:15 AM - this is where her nap definitely starts becoming inconsistent

E - 12:00 PM
A - 12:30 PM - play gym with mum
S - 1:15 - again not a great nap, 45 minutes at most before waking

E - 3:00 - 3:15PM
A - 3:30 - 3:45PM - music/toy time
S - 4:00 - 4:15Pm - not a great nap

E - 6:15
A - 6:45 - Swing time and then bath
S - 7:00 - 7:15

We dream feed between 10:30 and 11:00

2:30 - 3:00 AM - Feed
... and then start all over.

Any ideas or suggestions to improve sleep would be greatly appreciated!!

Your Lo could be going thru a growth spurt needing more food and being a little fussy.  If I were you I would do anything I could to stretch her to at least 2.5 hours between nursing.  With my 13 week lo I really have to distract her sometimes to stretch her that half hour or so until it's been long enough...it also helps her to nurse more aggressively and take a better feeding.  That alone may help her take better naps.  Also, my lo was waking early (5:30 or 6:00) for a feed and I was putting her back down and letting her sleep til she woke up (at about the same age as your lo) and I found that I just couldn't get her on a three hour easy doing this.  So I decided to start setting my alarm and making her take her first feeding at 7:30 (latest...even if it hadn't been three hours) so that we started the day at the same time consistently.  I couldn't believe how much of a difference it made during the day.  8 weeks is about the point when you start to see progress with EASY routine.  It may take a couple of days waking her to get her clock to register the change and adjust the rest of the day, but I bet you'd see improvements quickly.  It's hard to commit to waking up if she is sleeping because I love that extra couple of hours of shut eye myself, but it really does help them.  Anyway, hang in there.  It does get easier, but it takes time!

Hi there.

I thought this thread might help your lo's.

Erin, about the gas do you massage before bed??  This really helps my lo and if she's having trouble with it I give her gripe water.   Have you tried moving her bedtime to 7pm??

Here's a link for wake to sleep to help extend naps.
