Reverted back to 20 min naps???
« on: May 23, 2006, 16:48:39 pm »
My ds (5 months) was doing fairly well with naps.  He would normally sleep 1.5-2 hours in the morning, but then would only sleep for 45 min naps after that.  Now he has reverted back to 20 minutes!!!  I've noticed that at the 20 min mark, he raises his legs in the air and slams then down on the bed then he starts whimpering and eventually (3-5 minutes) starts crying.  Anyone else have this problem?  Do I need to stay with him until after the 20 minute mark again and help him get through?  Should I hold his legs down so he doesn't raise and slam them or just put my hand on him?  When I go in just after he has slammed his legs down, he is whimpering with his eyes closed.  I've tried putting my hand on him, but that doesn't work.  We attempt the 4 hour EASY every day but due to sporadic naps, it varies quite a bit.  He is normally awake for the full 2 hours with his feed, diaper and activity and then goes down for his nap quite easily (gets drowsy during nap routine).  But is waking after 20 minutes.  Its been a couple of days that this has been going on and so now he will only stay awake for 1.5-1.75 hours instead of the 2 before he is definitely tired and needs to nap.

He has just started "babbling" in the last couple of days and also is rubbing one spot of his gums with his tongue.  I can't feel anything so I'm not sure if he's teething...

Any help would be greatly appreciated as his nighttime sleeping is starting to suffer as well!

We don't swaddle anymore and he has been fine without it thus far.  I took him to the pediatrician yesterday as he had a sore on his toe and discovered he has an ingrown toenail.  I gave him some tylenol and he had a 1.5 hour nap so it must be bothering him and affecting his naps.  Poor little guy :(  I'm hoping that once we have his toe cleared up, things will return to normal.

I didn't know that developmental stages would affect their naps although I had heard it can affect night sleeping.  Thanks for the tip!  He hasn't started rolling over yet; he's just done it once or twice so far so that could also be affecting him.  Thanks for the info Stacy!
