How to best deal with growth spurt?
« on: May 24, 2006, 12:31:51 pm »
Hey guys,

My 10 month old DS is apparently going through a growth spurt.  The last 4 nights we've had to feed him during the night (full feeds, gulped it down in about 2 minutes).  His formula intake including night feed last night was 37 freakin' ounces, LOL!!  I know that they're not supposed to have more than 32 (max) at this age but here's my question...he didn't want solids at ALL yesterday...just his bottle.  Since formula is higher in calories, etc than solids anyway, should I encourage this formula binge that he's currently on, or try to hold back on bottles and really push the solids first?  We've had our morning feed & brekkie so far today and I gave the solids first and he had quite a bit but then he's only had 4 oz of formula.  Is this a step forward or a step back?  I'm just not sure how to get the most calories in him so that he won't need to down that 1am bottle.

Thanks!!

Sarah

At 10 months they really begin to start taking in more solids and less formula. So I would try the solids first, followed by the formula. Could he possibly be teething? A lot of LO's refuse solids when they are teething. Has he always had a night feed, or is this just because of the growth spurt?

Hi Christine,

Thanks for your reply.  I do offer solids first now (for the past two weeks or so).  I'll keep pushing them.  The night feeds are new...hasn't had one in a couple of months at least.  It's now 5nights straight though so I'm a bit worried...he's still taking a full 5 or 6 oz really quickly.

He's probably teething (aren't they always?!) but my DS has always had feeding issues.  You should see all my posts on the Solid Food board.  ::)  I guess he's an emotional eater like his mother... ;)

Thanks again!

Sarah

Your twins are adorable BTW.  :) Just wanted to warn you that the night feed could quickly turn into a habit. I know from experience.  ::) So, once you think the growth spurt is over make sure you phase out the feed.  :)
