11 Week Old Barely Naps
« on: June 11, 2006, 20:23:26 pm »
My 11 week old son barely naps.  He will take 3 or 4 short 20 minute naps throughout the day and I'm wondering how to extend them?  I've stayed in his room today to watch his sleep patterns and he is NOT jolting at the 20 minute mark to wake him.  His eyes just pop open and he's ready to go.  I know that he is able to nap for longer periods of time, but that's only when someone is holding him.  I obviously don't want to encourage that habit. Any advise would be appreciated!

The 3-month growth spurt, which is probably either happening or about to, tends to throw off sleep and feed schedules like mad.  :-\ For a little while you might want to try holding him at least past the point where he usually wakes up so he can get used to sleeping through whatever it is that wakes him.

Do you swaddle? That snuggly feeling seems to help many babies stay alseep longer.

That's all I can think of at the moment.....

I have tried swaddling, but he frequently seems frustrated by it and tries to kick out of it.  How long should I expect a growth spurt to last?  Is the three month growth spurt more significant than the ones up to this point?

Also, I will try holding him tomorrow, but, if he wakes up do I continue calming him and trying to get him to go back to sleep until his next feed?  That could be an hour or more?  Or do I end the sleep time and do activity until the next feed?
