Is she dropping her a.m. nap?
« on: June 08, 2006, 16:43:19 pm »
Hi all.

Dd is 10 months old and just getting her first tooth?  This week she has been fighting her a.m. nap where last week she was begging to go down before the 2.45 was up.  Is this a teething issue or is she changing?  I don't quite know if/when she is in pain.  She does need more snuggles and is more whinny.

She used to sleep 2 hours in the a.m. and one hour in the p.m.  Now she will sleep as much as three times spread sparatically throughout the day.  Sometimes it seems like she wants to sleep an hour after lunch.  Everything is so crazy.  Really I can roll with it I just don't want to ignore her signs if she is trying to drop a nap ... this week anyway.

One other thing about teething (perhaps the wrong forum).  Is it normal for dd to poop alot more, runny and sour?  I think because she is pooping four+ times a day the acid is hurting her labia as it is very red.  Is this what they call diaper rash?

Many thanks.

Hi there Charlotte. My DD is also 10 months and getting her first teeth. It's quite normal for them to fight naps when teething - the discomfort causes wakefulness. Additionally, my DD will easily go 3 hours until her first nap (sometimes longer if we have an early wake up or need to change things around). I'd try to extend her morning A time and limit that nap to 1.5 hours if possible and then shoot for second nap about 3.5 hours after the first nap ends.

Yes, that sounds like "teething poop" to me. We use and LOVE a cream called Pinxav (http://www.pinxav). Among other things, it helps neutralize acid.

Good luck!

I am sooo happy to hear from you.  It does seem (these days) like A time could be 4 hours in the a.m.  If that is the case her first nap would be at 11.30.  She would wake at 1.00 then have lunch and next nap would be 4.30.  O.k.  writting it out doesn't sound so bad.  I guess I am just thrown from our earlyish a.m. nap, lunch (at noonish) and next nap during Oprah.  ;)

I will definately try this tomorrow.

Since teething lasts for the next 12 months should I never expect things to go back to they were before?

Thanks again... and for the diaper rash tip.

Hi Charlotte,

We are going through the same thing at the moment but she is fighting her PM nap instead. She was sleeping up to 2hrs for her AM nap and then not wanting to go down for her PM nap at all. So i had to put her down for her AM nap earlier so she wouldn'r sleep as long and then i could fit in her PM nap. I am finding if she sleeps any later than 3.30/4pm for her PM nap it interferes with bedtime and she take to long to fall asleep.
This is what we are currently doing:

6.45/7am - Wake
Eat
9.30am - Sleep 1.15hrs (wakes on her own)
Eat
2pm - Sleep 45mins at the moment but trying to extend to 1-1.15hrs. She has at least stop fighting this nap.
Eat
Bath
Eat
7.15/30pm - Bed for the night.

I find the longer awake time she has in the morning the longer AM nap she will have. I don't like waking her from her AM nap so i just put her down earlier so she wakes earlier from this nap and then is tired enough to go down for PM nap.
As for the teething this is very normal for her BM to be more frequent and very runny. I have always used nappy rash cream on Catherine as she has been having these sort of nappies off and on since 6months old.

LOL Charlotte - teething DOES last forever but naps should settle when teeth aren't cutting, etc. Ideally maybe you can get her down from 11-12 and then again from 3:30-4:30?

Natasha - glad to hear she's no longer fighting the pm nap!

This is all about teething now.  Sorry.

Really really really ... is it normal for her to poop 7 in a day, very yucky, acidy, red labia and anus poops?

I feel so bad for her.  I have some over the counter hydrocortisone cream I am thinking of putting on until I get to the store for something high in zinc.

Any suggestions or comments.

Also, am I bad for using the tablets and tylenol overlaping by three hours?

That does sound a bit extreme for teething (poop wise) - you may want to have her checked over by the doctor to be safe. I'd also try to order the Pinxav (http://www.pinxav) for her ASAP- it really will help with the acid poop issue...

No, that is not bad at all. Does the Tylenol help her at all? Doesn't touch my DD's teeething pain. The teething tablets help a little, Motrin more.

Oh boy.  The plot thickens.  As far as the poop goes on the 7th (her 10month old day) I started one cup of homo milk per day.  Her teething seemed to hit a max as well as the poop.  Today so far I have not given milk and we are at two poops.  I thought it couldn't be the milk because she eats lots of dairy and her formula and cereal have milk ingredients.

Any chance it could be the homo milk (3%).

I am glad you commented on the tylenol because it doesn't really seem to do much but never thought it would be any less than great for her pain.

I will visit the site and get some motrin.

It could DEFINITELY be the milk. Many babies can tolerate milk-based formula, cheese, etc but not homo milk at first... Some babies do better with 2% milk at first even, easier to digest. And even then maybe start out with only a few ounces a day and slowly build up from there.

Keep in mind that the Motrin should never be given on empty tummy - can cause stomach upset that way.

OMG I have my baby back ... sorta.

That day I stopped the milk.  Within a day I noticed a difference in her mood, sleeping and pooping.  By two days the diaper rash was clearing up and she didn't cry everytime we changed her bum.

The last two days she has been a bit whinny but the tooth is getting higher and higher.  Poor girl but we can handle all that.

I am terrified to try milk again so I am going to wait until she is 11 months old and try 2% first.

Thank you so much for your help and I am sorry this is no longer even close to a NAP question.  I am very appreciative.

No problem - I'm a food allergy mod too!!!

Honestly, if it were me, I'd hold off on milk until 12 months and slowly try the 2% then - only a few ounces the first day and increasing from there. Glad she's back to herself!
