Generic vs. Name Brand
« on: June 27, 2006, 00:13:29 am »
I would like to save some money on formula (who wouldn't), but I'm afraid to buy the store brand.  I'm wondering if it causes more fussiness or gas?  Any thoughts?  What do you use?  Currently I'm switching my LO from soy to milk based.  I read somewhere that milk based is closer to BM...have you heard this?

Hi,

I've never used store brand formula, not because I think it's worse than the name brands, but DS was so gassy when I first started him on milk-based formula (Similac), that when I finally switched him to a brand name soy-based formula (Isomil, because our pediatrician gave me a sample) and it reduced his fussyness I wasn't going to mess with that. I am sure that all formulas, whether store brand or name-brand have to meet a certain standard. Also, I am not sure whether for us store brand would have been cheaper, since we kept getting the $5 off coupons from the company, AND bought our formula at a warehouse store (BJ's) where the price was cheaper. We use the Parents Choice formula from walmart and haven't had any issues.  It was the same as Similac.

We also just switched to Parent's Choice.  We were using Enfamil with Lipils....and our LO is doing better on the generic than the brand...he's not spitting up as much.

I used to use Good Start formula but found that my lo had really bad smelling gas and his poops were really thick and green.  It's been over a week now that we've switched to President's Choice brand and he is doing really well on it.  It's cheaper too so it's worked out great!

The FDA regulates them.   Check out http://www.storebrandformula.com to read more about them.

We are transitioning over to Parents Choice after realizing how nutty the Enfamil costs add up - there is NO need - in our case.   I will add in the new form slowly and may even go 1/2 1/2 to maintain what she is used to - it's only for the next 5 months.  She was primarily bf and when we supplemented we always used Enfamil Lipil.

The hosptals and Dr's are all in cahoots and benefiting from promoting brand A or B.

Just wanted to add that DDs poops are thick (although she's ALWAYS been constipated) and green (sometimes almost black) on Good Starts.  Asked the ped and he was fine with it.   Yeah, they smell pretty bad too, but not as bad as when we started solids!  Pee-you-wee!  She can clear a room!

I may have spoken too soon.   Last night I made her night and DF bottles with 1 scoop out of 4 as the "new" kind and this AM I did the same.   She wsa crying this AM - she NEVER does and she spit up about 4 times - NEVER does!!!!   Her AM nap is always 1.5 hours and today it was 1/2 hour!!!  I will say that she WAS in the car for her nap - but that never mattered the other day when we had a longer trip to make.

My point, I definitly think (now) that although similar - some kids may have issues with the transition and I am not willing to mess up a great thing for a few $$$$ - back to Enfamil.  Oh well
